Montenegro Hoteliers Seek State Cash Help | 03 February 2009 |
Montenegrin hoteliers seek state helpWorried about surviving the financial crisis, owners of luxury hotels on Montenegro’s coast are seeking government help to pay back their loans.
Hoteliers who took loans in previous years to build or renovate four- and five-star hotels say the financial crisis came at the worst time, when they just finished the work on their hotels and were looking to recuperate the costs.
“We had a successful tourist season, but 2009 is a huge question mark,” Zarko Radulovic, co-owner of the Splendid hotel in Becici and president of Montenegro’s hoteliers union, told Serbia's Tanjug news agency.
He said a “credit injection” from the state would be the only way for them to avoid bankrupcy and be forced to sell off their hotels.
The assistance they were seeking was not grants, however, but government-backed loans, commercial credits they would pay back with interest after they survived this year.

Why does that sound like an SOS from a sinking Titanic.

Why does that sound like an SOS from a sinking Titanic. I tihnk they're hoping that Serbs will go there this year. I doubt it. The politics in Montenegro have soured relations, even worst then in the late 90s. Even with the claims the government has made, there was a 30% drop in tourists. Montenegro's image as a destination has been tarnished, even with all the positive articles by newspapers abroad most people don't have good things to say. Also. The boom is over, no more Russian buyers and no Russian tourists. It reinforces Montenegro's inability to sustain an economy independent of Serbia. Especially know that KAP is closing.

^^ We all know Djukanovic is still going to win the elections anyway. I hope to god its not the case, but remember people........REAL Montenegrins only account for 33% of the population these days. The fighting spirit that we were known for no longer exists. The Siptars, The Balije and the Djukanistanis are still the majority.........Montenegro will keep on struggling while this is the case. PS> This is the first year i dont feel like going to Montenegro Ill probly just go to Beograd and then to the Greek Islands or something.

PS> This is the first year i dont feel like going to Montenegro Ill probly just go to Beograd and then to the Greek Islands or something. Djukanovic is still in power because of incompetence of regimes in Beograd [when DOS came to federal power in 2000 they should have arrested him and Slobo right away, tried them for treason, executed them and of course declared a huge amnesty for everyone else] and the incompetence of the opposition. Look at the Serb parties you have 8 present in parliament through two coalitions. The parties and coalitions have basically the same policies [same level of nationalism, same leftist policies, just different persons leading them] and the fact that that there are two many hinders the opposition. The hinderance is especially bad considering that now that because fo the recognition they are sympatico with the main opposition the Movement for Changes. I haven't seen any polls out yet but I believe you are correct that this will be a repeat of the alst elections. Deadlock and Djukanovic using minorities to obtain a majority. I hope that things get worst economicaly from now on until March 29, faster then Djukanovic expected. He originally wanted to hold the elections in December knowing how bad the situation would be and if elections were held then he was 100% certain he would lose. Only if things get worst dramatically by march will a djukanovic loss be certain. Hopefully to get votes the opposition will focus on the following: a. The property bubble ending. b. The lack of growth in tourists among Russians, westerners and the huge fall in Serb tourists. c. The certain suspension of activities by KAP. d. The recognition. e. The games Djukanovic plays with dual citizenship.
