MONTENEGRO EMERGES AS TOP CONFERENCE TOURISM DESTINATION
MONTENEGRO EMERGES AS TOP CONFERENCE TOURISM DESTINATION 21 February 2009
With the establishment of a convention bureau to boost the Montenegro’s appeal to event planners, the country was chosen as a top emerging destination for conference tourism by the British Conference & Incentive Travel (C&IT) Magazine. “Boasting beautiful beaches, mountain scenery, UNESCO-protected mediaeval towns and a growing number of luxury and boutique hotels, it’s no surprise that the country ranked fourth in the top emerging destinations section of C&IT"s 2009 State of the Industry Report,” the publication wrote.“The convention bureau, which was set up last year, aims to promote Montenegro in international markets and develop access, hotels, conference centres and off-site venues and infrastructure,” Danica Ceranic, the bureau’s manager told the C&IT Magazine. Two factors contributing to Montenegro’s rise as a conference tourism destination are the dramatic growth in the number of hotels being built and renovated both along the coast and inland and the improvement in flight access from abroad.“Montenegro offers an incredible variety of nature and culture,” Ceranic said, adding that, “There are few places in the world with multiple climate zones within a relatively small area, where the visitor can sunbathe in the morning on the seashore, hike and bike in the mountains in the afternoon and explore the cobblestone streets of ancient towns in the evening. Montenegro has the world"s second deepest canyon (after the Grand Canyon), and the only Fjord in the Mediterranean.”The monthly C&IT Magazine, which covers the leading brands and their event strategies, has a readership of over 18,000 agency and corporate event planners. Despite being a new country - it only declared independence from Serbia in June 2006 - Montenegro has a rich culture and history. Boasting beautiful beaches, mountain scenery, Unesco-protected mediaeval towns and a growing number of luxury and boutique hotels, it's no surprise that the country ranked fourth in the top emerging destinations section of C&IT's 2009 State of the Industry Report. A new convention bureau set up last year aims to further boost the country's appeal to event planners. Manager Danica Ceranic, who has worked with the National Tourism Organisation of Montenegro since 2004, gives the lowdown on the convention bureau's plans and new developments in the country.
- What support does the convention bureau have? At the moment we have 18 members, mainly four- and five-star hotels with custom-built conference facilities, as well as professional agencies.
- What are your main objectives? Our goals are to ensure that we develop the access, hotels, conference centres, off -site venues and infrastructure to make our offer attractive and exciting. The other part is to promote our country in international markets and make it easy for prospective buyers to secure reliable and impartial advice, exhibit at key trade shows such as Imex and EIBTM, and become members of relevant international trade associations.
- What developments are in the pipeline? We are experiencing dramatic growth in the number of hotels being built and renovated both along the coast and inland. Many of these will have custom built conference facilities. We will see major international hotel chains opening properties like luxury Aman resorts which signed a 30-year lease and management contract for prestigious hotels including: the hotel island resort of Sveti Stefan; the former royal summer residence, Milocer; and the hotel resort Queen's Beach. Four Seasons is building a hotel in Tivat, where the naval facility will be transformed into a world class marina and Kempinski is planning to open its first hotel in Montenegro. By 2010, 20 new hotels will have opened across the country.
- Can you cater for large events? A number of sites are being looked at and there are plans to build two convention centres in Montenegro. One in Podgorica, capital of Montenegro, and one in Budva.
- How has flight access improved? Direct airline access into Montenegro is improving and will continue to do so. As from June last year, there are direct flights from the UK, from Gatwick three times a week.
- What is Montengro's best kept secret? Montenegro offers an incredible variety of nature and culture. There are few places in the world with multiple climate zones within a relatively small area - where the visitor can sunbathe in the morning on the seashore, hike and bike in the mountains in the afternoon and explore the cobblestone streets of ancient towns in the evening. Montenegro has the world's second deepest canyon (after the Grand Canyon), and the only Fjord in the Mediterranean. www.citmagazine.com/news/877747/Montenegro-New-block/
