I don't know if these have been posted before, but are relevant as evidence to the once thriving Greek community in Monastiri. And yet the skops have the audacity to accuse us of ethnic-cleansing and cultural genocide. From the book Pictures From The Balkans by John Foster Fraser - Eastern question (Balkan) - 1906 Greeks, Bulgarians and the Archbishoporic of Ohrid Serbian Macedonia A Historical Survay by Pavle Popovic 1918 New York Times December 27th of 1902

Pavle Popovic....loads of nonsense.
p.s. Can we say that Tessaloniki was once a prosperous Bulgarian town? I mean, it surely had higher percentage of Bulgarians than this Monastiri had of Greeks. In my opinion, it ie pretty fair conclusion.

Sorry, Basil, but the biggest ethnic groups in Tessaloniki (have in mind I have the descency to call it that way) were Bulgarians, Greeks and Vlahs. Not Jews and Turks.

You can call it however you want. Kassander, "Thessaloniki" named it. Its your decision if you gonna use the real name or an artificial one.
Now.. where did you get your info? Jews, for a short period of time(when Ottomans killed most of the Greek citizens during the Greek rebelion in the south) have reached even the first position in numbers ...until the Greeks start coming back...

You are right. Please replace Greeks with Jews

That cannot happen pagane because i gave the link with the history of Thessaloniki..... and if you read it... Thessaloniki without Greeks is not ... Thessaloniki.. ..and one more time.. illyria.proboards19.com/index.cgi....lay&thread=2499Bulgarians.. although they were in the total of Northern Greeece in satisfactory numbers... they were not a part of the tottal history of the place. In other words.. they were not so many so as to create history in this place. On the contrary, Greeks who were also in satisfactory numbers the same period at Romelia and Philipoupoli especialy (Plodiv in modern Bulgaria) and Monastiri where much more active and they were a big part of region's history. But.. what are we talking about. Bulgarians went up to Bulgaria.... Greeks went down in Greece.. and c'est la vie.

Basil, Thessaloniki has much bigger place in Bulgarian history than Plovdiv in the greek one. After all, Thessaloniki was the place where the IMRO (VMRO) was established. It is also the place where the Bulgarian High School in macedoania opened its doors and gave education to a great number of our fighters against Turks. Can you say the same about Plovdiv?
Don't get me wrong. Today this city is inhabited by about 2 million Greeks. I have no problem with that. Just don't underestimate its significance in Bulgarian history.

Monastir was mostly populated with Albanians. Incorrect. It was populated mostly by Vlachs, who beginning at least in the 19th century, had a Greek national conscious.
