That was approx 10% of Greeks who came. The Police made an intentional underestimate of that crowd to be 40,000. Police always underestimate on purpose. Victor1 History of immigration from Greece Greeks have been establishing new lives in Victoria ever since the gold rush of the 1850s. Many Greeks were amongst the sailers who left their English ships in Australian waters when they heard the discovery of gold. Most intended to return home rich men, so few women came to join them. By 1871, there were still only 19 Greece-born women in Victoria, and 127 men. After the gold declined, those who stayed found work in restaurants, cafes and shops. Full info of years of migration; museumvictoria.com.au/origins/history.aspx?id=23From the census 2006. There are almost approx 450,000 to 500,000 Greeks in Melbourne alone, 278,000 Speak and write Greek at home which 50% of that figure were born in Australia and are second or third generation Australian born Greeks. There are Greek Universities, high schools all funded by Greece and the community its self. Australian Greeks are one of the richest of ethnic groups, they average three houses, give one house per child for free [totaly debt free]. A dowry

Very true. ;D Arxhileas, Have you heard of the Greek convicts? It was during the Ottoman years. I don't know the complete story but they where caught robbing a British vessel for supplies to fight the Ottomans. They where immediately branded pirates by the British courts and where sent to Australia as convicts. I'm guessing they where the first Greek Australians. PS- Who did you vote for today? Interesting...Some thing too look into ardefe, first time I heard of this...As for who I voted, I can't remember now ! ;D Let's just say it's gonna be an interesting new leadership [change of Government]....Was time for a change any ways.
