Serbia: Slain ethnic Germans honored September 20, 2008 10:53 AM BELGRADE, Serbia-A monument has been unveiled in northern Serbia honoring thousands of ethnic Germans killed after World War II.
The cross-shaped monument is at the Catholic cemetery in Sremska Mitrovica, the site of a post-WWII prison camp.
About 520,000 ethnic Germans lived in what the was Kingdom of Yugoslavia before WWII. Many sided with the Nazis during the war and Nazi occupation.
At the end of the war, victorious Communist troops killed thousands of ethnic Germans and expelled some 300,000 in just two years.
Svilara camp in Sremska Mitrovica existed between 1945 and 1947. Hundreds of ethnic German civilians perished there.
An association of ethnic Germans from Serbia said that acknowledging the atrocities and honoring the dead will help reconciliation.

Well now I cannot say "there is no monument in Serbia that honours members of the SS and their families" anymore.

Honouring them is the last thing on my mind...

The reason there is monuments is because of the anti german hysteria that took hold after the war, many where out for revenge and even the innocents where blamed and murdered by the communists.
It happened all over europe and countless numbers where murdered.
They deserve respect.

I don't know what the real reasons are behind this, but you guys should know that there were many Germans that were very loyal citizens, and contributed very positively. I live in a town that used to have about 30% of german population in the beginning of the 20th century, so I can say that most of the stuff I was reading about relations between Germans and Serbs described the relations as mostly positive.

Also the Petrovaradin neighborhood in Novi Sad, was a german neighborhood. I think past is past, and the ordinary german had nothing to do with hitler. Some german spirit lives in there, and has contributed to the whole Novi Sad style of living.
The serbs should know what it is to demonize whole nations as a result of biased and enforced policies.
