Dinar introduced 135 years ago 12 December 2008 | 14:06 | Source: Tanjug BELGRADE -- The Serbian dinar was introduced as the domestic currency 135 years ago today, at the initiative of then Minister of Finance Èedomir Mijatoviæ.
Serbia had previously joined the Latin Monetary Union (LMU), created by France, Belgium, Italy and Switzerland in Paris in 1865.
Dinar coins were minted out of gold in denominations of 10 and 20, while the five, two, one and one-half dinars were made of silver.
The gold coins, issued to mark the coronation of King Milan in 1882, were popularly called milandor in Europe - French for Milan d'Or (Milan of Gold).
The name of the new monetary unit, introduced 135 years ago, was taken from the currency of the medieval Serbian kingdon, where dinars were the official currency in circulation during the 13th century reign of King Uroš I.
