Really nice places! One needs plenty of time to explore these areas. I don't want to be riped off by a taxi driver of course, .. so we shall choose a minibus or other option (we did not book any transfer; it was an online booking and the hotel is 10km from Antalya airport).

Yea Thracian, it's a beautiful country with nice places. Hope everything will work and we'll spend some good time. I don't mind having some Russian girls around there. They are nice to talk to. Thanks again.. I'll drop you some lines when there.

I love it when the water is crystal clear. Where is this mostly found in Turkey, along the southern coast or in the western, Aegean coast? Also are there any resorts along the Black Sea, or is the tourism primarily centered along these lines?

Donnie, you'll find crystal clear waters all around Turkey - the Aegean and Meditereanean. Black sea has resorts, it's also really pretty; but the ocean waves are scary. No one really goes there for swimming.
Start from Ayvalik around the aegean sea, go a little south to Cesme (near Izmir), more south to Bodrum and Marmaris. If you go to Fetiye you'll see a lot of old ruins and white sanded beaches.

Lets not forget about Cesme... I have friends that go to Bozcada every year, is there some kind of a water problem there? Water temperature around Bozcaada is almost never warm. Perhaps it is related to spring water coming out from the Anatolian land mass. Either way, it is quite refreshing though.

And Turkey has a really long coast.

Turkey and North Cyprus have wonderful coastline. Overall I think Turkeys coastlines have become slightly overcrowded withthe influx of tourists over the years. If you want pure crystal clear water. Totally untouched beaches then i advise you to go to Cyprus. You can dive and watch lots of fishes and other sea creatures, it doesn't feel like you are in the year 2010, it has a distinct feeling of relaxation and being in history somewhere....
Turkeys beaches are also very nice don't get me wrong, but the North Cyprus sea is undoubtedly much cleaner and clearer. South Cyprus has also been polluted especially the Aya Napa region. Its overcrowded and dirty, full of English tourists.

Antalya was ok.. I liked the nice view from the hotel, beautiful mountains.. and I saw a nice waterfall not far from our hotel. The beach terrace was beautiful too and I've been enjoying swimming in the sea. I would really want to go to Kas and Kaputas Beach - looks so nice from the pic. Donnie, I hope you enjoy your holiday in Alanya!

Thanks Vizier and Thracian, just came back and I did have a great time.
I was in Turkey altogether seven days, one day in Side and six in Alanya. The weather was perfect, not all too hot, as one cabdriver told us "this is really spring for us, it's much hotter during August & July". In the first day in Side we visited the ancient ruins of the city, and I was stunned to see how great and well preserved it was. The amphitheatre was really beautiful, and there were columns and stones everywhere, giving the impression that this was a very important city during antiquity.
After that, we took a trip to Alanya. Nature wise, this was more beautiful than Side, since I love mountains and the Side area was quite flat, while in Alanya you had great mountains in the background, with the superb castle on the mountaintop dividing the city in two. We visited it and the view was magnificent, one of the more beautiful views Ive seen. I'll show pictures later. The water was very nice, great waves occasionally ,, it was very relaxing to sit on the beach, drinking Efes and enjoying the spectaular sight that is the meditterranean meeting steeping mountains crashing into the water.
We tried to integrate as much as we could with the locals, eating where more Turks and less tourists ate. The food was very good, especially one restaurant left a lasting impression as we returned several times; it was called karakasi or black eyebrow, and they offered great meals at the cost of perhaps fifteen to twenty Turkish lire, which in Sweden wouldve cost perhaps 60 lire. Absolutely fantastic cuisine ... the only negative thing about the trip was that you couldt trully enjoy the football games, bcs there were much things to do and see. Sitting in the beach in the night under the moonlight became a ritual for us, and one time we had the pleasure of accompanying a Turkish orchestre of young guys playing traditional music and singing Turkish songs!
I'll come back wit some pictures of the castle, the ruins, the beaches etc.
PS People were very friendly, esp. when hearing I was 'Arnaut'. I also lost some twenty lire in a restaurant near the beach ... the Turks who worked there followed us for several hundred metres calling until the caught us and returned the money.

I've read that in Side, the town Selimiye is inhabited by Tourkokretans. Have you noticed it?
I would like to visit Turkey. One time in Konstantinoupolis, another in the south Aegean coast(Makri-"Fethiye"), and another in Cappadocia and mediterranean coast.
Donnie, give us some more examples of the prices. The rooms, the taxis etc... in euro if its possible...

I read in a brochure that this is so, that the Turks of Side have their origins in Crete. But there was no way of noticing otherwise, there was no difference between them and other Turks.
Same here. This is my first time in Turkey, but it'sonly a small part; it would be nice to visit Istanbul, Izmir and other big places as well.
The prices compared to Sweden were very cheap. There were several places where you could have an entire lunch for the price of six lire, approximately 3 euro. These could vary, from four lire (2euro) to ten lire (5 euro). In more expensive places, some dishes with drinks included could reach 14 lire, or 7 euro, like the restaurant I mentioned, but then you also got very good service and excellent food. A beer usually costed between 2 euro or so, drinks in the clubs varied, you got a tequila shot for seven lire, approximately 3-4 euro.
When we booked the trip, we booked it in the last minute meaning our hotel was unspecified, together it cost each of us 180 euros. Not all too expensive, especially since we were situated just 100 metres from Kleopatra beach (the better beach since Alanya has two beaches separated by the steep mountain with the castle) and just 10-15 minutes on foot from the harbor where the nightlife was.
I dont know much about cabs, usually we took buses or so called dolmuz (small mini-bus) which cost about 50 cent or so) ... we took a cab just once, from the castle to our hotel, which cost us 10 lira, or five euros, it was a ten minute drive. Overall, the trip wasnt costly at all, comparatvely prices are very cheap there, and ifyou can bargain, you can bring down prices on most things, clothes or food.

Side is a cool place I was there maybe 5 years ago, its not my usual type of holiday place since its pretty small. There are much cheaper and more beautiful places than Side.
About the food, food in restaurants in Turkey is extremely cheap, where normally in England a 3 course meal for 4 people costs well over a 100 pounds, you get the same thing in Turkey in the most luxury places for 50 pounds.!!
The only think I didn't like about Side was that all the restaurant garçons were from the south east and were too friendly. The locals also were too villagy ....
