Bulgaria's Research, Innovation Well Below EU Average Business | February 2, 2011, Wednesday
Bulgaria's research and innovation have been ranked next to last in the EU , the annual EU Innovation Union Scoreboard has shown.
Only Latvia has performed worse than the Balkan country in 2010.
"The performance of Bulgaria, Latvia, Lithuania and Romania is well below that of the EU27. These countries are modest innovators," the report says.
However, Bulgaria is also among the growth leaders together with Estonia, Malta, Romania, Portugal and Slovenia with anaverage annual growth rate well above 5%.
Sweden is the innovation leader of the EU, followed by Denmark, Finland and Germany.
The Innovation Union Scoreboard provides a comparative assessment of the research and innovation performance of the 27 EU Member States and the relative strengths and weaknesses of their research and innovation systems.
As a whole, the US and Japan are holding their lead over the EU in the innovation field, but the EU is maintaining its lead over India and Russia. However, the EU 27 is losing its lead over Brazil, in particular in the Firm activities category and License and patents revenues from abroad. China continues rapidly to narrow its performance gap with the EU, in particular in the Firm activities category. www.novinite.com/view_news.php?id=124823

Where does Serbia rank?
I know that just recently, agreements have been made to finally instal wind turbines, to channed wind-energy.
I personally think its about time Serbia starts investing into other energy resources.
For any nation in economic struggle, the only smart investment is in the energy sector.

I really don't know much about this. I mean, there is not a lot of information you can find about innovations. I rememebr a few months ago there was quite a mess when the government decided to cut some of the money for the Bulgarian Academy of Science. People were divided into what to think about it - some claimed science always needed money, others claimed that this Academy did nothing and came up with fvck all. As a result, the academy decided to show some things they have invented in recent years. Some were good but nothing really amazing to justify the existance of so many people working there, in my opinion.

Bulgarian Academy of Science decided to close the Institute of Thracology. Why not another one i.e. the Institute of historical studies?
