De Niro: Maybe I’m a Serb…!
Movie star Robert de Niro, founder of Tribeca Film Festival, and representatives of Sallyport, DreamWorks and Coppola movie companies told Serbia’s President Boris Tadic they are interested in investing in the Serbian film industry and in privatization of “Avala Film”.
After the meeting with Tadic in New York hotel Waldorf Astoria, De Niro said they talked about making movies and film studios in Serbia, and that he wasn’t aware Serbia has studios modeled after the Roman Cinecittà, which is “a great thing”.
“We’ve met and talked about making movies in Serbia, in studios they have there. We generally talked about a possible future cooperation, because you never know,” De Niro said.
“I remember the times when I was in Belgrade, it was terrific, the city was terrific at that time, I’m sure it’s the same now, if not better. To shoot movies there, to live or work there would be a nice thing. I don’t know if I’ll do that, but I might, it is a great place,” De Niro said.
He also recalled being a guest at the Belgrade International Film Festival, FEST. He named his daughter Drina, by one of his favorite novels “The Bridge on Drina River”, written by the Serbian Nobel laureate Ivo Andric.
He reiterated he was a great fan of Serbia’s best tennis player Novak Djokovic.
“Maybe I’m part Serbian… somewhere in my history,” De Niro said, adding that “Djokovic is a great kid”.
One of the most popular Hollywood stars, Robert De Niro has often been seen in Djokovic’s VIP box supporting the world’s third best ranked tennis player during his US Open tournament matches.
