Apr 05 2011 The population of Bulgaria has shrunk by 582 000 people in the past decade, according to preliminary results of the population census, released by the National Statistics Institute (NSI) on April 5 2011. The figures were very close to preliminary estimates of "nearly 600 000", which were reported by Bulgarian media on March 1, immediately after the end of the census. The population decline was equivalent to the disappearance of 28 medium-sized Bulgarian towns. In 2001, there were 7.932 million in the country, which fell to 7.351 million in the 2011 census. The 2011 census, which was launched in February 1, ended on February 28. The highest increase was recorded by the over 65 age bracket, according to the NSI. A decade ago, they constituted about 16.8 per cent of the population, whereas now their share was 18.9 per cent. Additionally, about 193 000 Bulgarian have left the country in the past decade, NSI said. www.sofiaecho.com/2011/04/05/1070468_bulgarias-population-shrank-by-582-000-in-a-decade-official

Bulgaria should reach out to the ex-Bulgars across the border. I know many Macedonians have been given passports, but maybe the gov't can provide free housing and/or provide gov't jobs for any macedonians that claim Bulgarian citizenship. Target those that live in mixed Albanian areas. Most of them are looking to leave to begin with.

Kijgol, that's an interesting suggestion but it would probably be best for the Macedonian Bulgars to remain where they are.
With regards to Bulgaria reaching out to Bulgars that are outside of the Bulgarian borders, I absolutely agree with you. Our government really needs to put some emphasis on that matter as we're becoming easy assimilation targets. But then again, there are a whole bunch of problems within the Bulgarian borders.. it's all fucked, but it sure as hell ain't all lost yet.

I read a report that claimed over 1/2 of the Macedonian youths want to leave the country. Granted Bulgaria is not the ideal situation, but I would assume many of these Macedonians would rather emigrate to a country that has a similar culture and language in Bulgaria as opposed to leaving for the West. Bulgaria is in a position where it could take advantage of the situation in Macedonia and should take a more aggressive stance. Another idea is to have Bulgarian universities give out free scholarships to Macedonians. Many of these students could decide to live in Bulgaria afterwards.
Another alternative is to set up programs to have the diaspora return back, however, Bulgaria could never implement a program to attract a large number of emigrates IMO. The incentive for Macedonians to move to Bulgaria are larger.....

Yes, I agree. Bulgaria must take a much more active stance with regards to Macedonia. Unfortunately, Bulgaria's politics are really far away from any matters concerning Macedonia. It's a sob story.
This truly is a great idea.

I don't know the situation well in Bulgaria but Bulgaria will need to build up it's economy first. People are leaving due to lack of opportunities and work, many bulgarians wouldn't have left if they felt there was a decent chance to succeed in Bulgaria. You also don't want to import Asian/African immigrants as it will cause unrest and will be virtually impossible to integrate into society.
Learn from the Greeks. Most of the golden modern Greeks have genetics from Albanians, Bulgars, slavs, turks, gypsies, etc..
It's also better to have a smaller population as it's easier to manage. Bulgars leaving the country can be beneficial to the country as unemployment will decrease and those living abroad can invest and support family members back at home.

I have left as well - despite my desire to stay. I left for Scandinavia to earn and save money for house and small business of mine. But after 5-6 years I will come back. For sure. I can't leave my homeland forever - not at this age of mine.....

Ruse brother - I had good job that is true. I worked on two more places part time (weekend) and I had established my own company for selling medical lasers . I have bought brand new car but believe me bro - when I calculated how much I have to pay to the bank if I buy a house in Sofia.....I didn't like the result. These blood suckers put such high % fee and you have no protection from them. So I decided I must act and do something. I received very good offer from an employer from Scandinavia. And I accepted it. To say that I am ok - I don't know man....I am ok in terms of finances and social security....but I miss my Bulgaria, my wife and my young son. I will come back. This is for sure. But when I come back - I will buy one of those new nice houses in the small closed and secured neighbourhoods and I will reinvest in my business . These are my thoughts for the future - we have to wake up our economy and start really to produce something. My dream is to open one day my own company for IP and design of integrated circuits. We use to have traditions in this area - I really would like to continue it. Cheers bro! And don't give up! We won't leave our land to gypsies and turks. Or thracians like Rezhie ;D.

Population decline is a common trend across all of Europe. Our desire these days to be *rich* and *career* over family are some of the reasons why Europe is on the decline.....its o.k, bring in more immigrants that arn't compatible to European culture to fill the void
