The Greeks: Crucible of Civilization is a fitting tribute to the glory of ancient Greece, telling the story of Greek democracy from its first stirrings in 500 B.C. through to the cataclysmic wars that virtually destroyed the empire. It concludes with a fascinating look at how the Greeks were defeated, yet their philosophy endured and changed the world forever. Beautifully photographed, and with intelligent narration delivered by actor Liam Neeson, this documentary goes into considerable detail while also being engaging to the eye as well as the mind. The photography at ancient sites is often spectacular and judicious use of actors filmed in re-creations of critical events provide immediacy. Much of the story relates how the Greeks essentially invented politics and democracy, and interviews with prominent scholars of classical history provide insight into the major characters, including Thales, Pericles, and Socrates. The stories of epic battles on land and sea and a thoughtful treatment of the Greek ideals of heroism are presented well. But the documentary particularly succeeds in the latter stages, when the story turns to the downfall of Socrates and a thoughtful explanation of how Greek philosophy transformed civilization.Watch the full documentary now (playlist – 2 hours, 45 minutes)

This documentary got me in to Greek history a long time back. What would you say caused or is the reason for the demise we see now in Greece? The fact that we are an unbranded nation grabbing identity from left and right (greek, alb, slavic, etc...) at least 80% or modern albs and 80% of modern greeks have nothing to do with : - albs - greeks - romans - slavs They are (well ... we are, yes this is Pyrros speaking) an old asian stock of unknown origin brought to the balkans after 9th cent AD. Most of them were speaking Latin at the time, without of course meaning that there was anything real latin in them. Later those latin speakers (who i repeat had nothing to do with real romans) became (under the command of the Romans/west) what we know today as "Albs" and "Greeks". Without the aforementioned hypothesis IT IS COMPLETELY IMPOSSIBLE to explain the simplest details today in the balkans. This hypothesis is a necessity to achieve minimum understanding of the real situation. That said, it is proven that most of the newest albo-greek heroes (post 1500 AD) *ALL* had Serbian ancestry. (Miaoulis family who are supposed to be arvanites from Albania, but later proved they CAME TO ALBANIA FROM SERBIA, a blatant example).

Uz man, listen to what Pyrros is saying here: The well known Mikis Theodorakis, left, communist composer, one the best known greek modern figures had said that while fighting for the communists THERE WAS A HUGE CULTURAL SCHISM BETWEEN THE "educated" communists of Athens (hint : athens is a western creation) and the VLACH communists of southern/central/northern greece!!! HE JUST COULD NOT BEAR THEIR MUSIC!!!!!! YOU SEE? In the meantime i suppose any SLOVENIAN even POLISH communist would fall in ecstasy just by listening to the tunes of Mekadonia, or South Serbia...... you start to see the big picture now? We are a fake nation.

I have read articles saying that most Greeks and Albanians are of indigenous stock. But yeah! I would think that Albanians and Greeks do have at least some non-Albanian and non-Greek ancestry too. I mean, the Romans, Huns, Slavs, Thracians, Bulgars and Ottomans all ruled at least some parts of the Balkans. The Ottomans were said to have resettled some refugee Sephardi Jews and some Anatolians(Yoruks) in the Balkans. Then the Romanis(Gypsies) also came in under the Ottomans.

In the political sense? ...Historically, there had never been an Albanian nation or state. ... Indeed, before 1912, Albania or Shqiperia, had never existed as a nation or state. .
