Air Pollution Kills 200 in Albania 02 11 2007 Tirana _ More than 200 people die every year in Albania due to increased levels of air pollution, according to a study published by the World Health Organization on Thursday.
The study says air pollution levels in parts of Albania, especially in the capital Tirana, are well above European levels.
Presenting the study, Albanian Minister of Health, Nard Ndoka stressed that if action is not taken, “air pollution will cost every citizen of Tirana two years of their lifespan.”
The study added that children in the Albanian capital are exposed to a high risk of respiratory disease caused by pollution.
In 2006 Albania drafted a new national strategy for lowering the amount of pollution in the country.
Priorities include improving air quality, protecting water sources and forests and promoting recycling.
Prime Minister Sali Berisha has acknowledged that Tirana is one of the most polluted cities in Europe.
He has urged state institutions and local authorities to work together to clean it up.
The large number of old cars, many of them obtained second-hand from abroad, is one of the major contributors to excessive levels of air pollution.
According to official estimates, more than 70 per cent of the over 200,000 cars on Albania’s roads are at least 10 years old, and 30 per cent of the total are still using leaded petrol.
The number of cars is increasing by about 10,000 a year.

This is indeed alarming. Something drastic is needed to be done in order for Tirana to not become Europe's Santiago. Hopefully the new generations are environmentally (more) conscious. I'm not an expert about their thoughts on other spheres of society, but I would want to vote for the Green Party -- they're currently in coalition with PD (leading party for the moment); I wonder if this will have any effects on a positive development!?
The serious reduction of pollution in the major cities is/should be the first step; preserving natural reserves is another. The legislation of laws that will protect natural reserves, such as the forests of Lura, is not sufficient. More should be done to concretely protect them, since illegal felling of trees is still an issue. The maintenance of the riviera is also a crucial step, both for the sake of environment but also tourism, since Albania is growing as a tourist resort.

I saw on oz t.v the other day about a report of the effects of air pollution on the respiratory system. Co2 in high concentrations can lead to hardening of the arteries which increases the risk of heart attacks, even amougst younger people.
I believe the city of Tirana will come up with a solution to the problem, but l would really hate to be the environment representitive for mexico city.
