More than half of Albanians want to emigrate - Gallup -
TIRANA (Albania), June 12 (SeeNews) - More than half, or 56%, of Albanians would like to emigrate, driven away by chronic high unemployment in their country, according to a survey by international polling company Gallup.
Albania ranks second worldwide in terms of its citizens' desire to emigrate, having the same percentage of potential emigrants as Haiti, the results of Gallup's 2013-2016 poll published last week showed.
The percentage of potential migrants from Albania more than doubled, compared to the previous edition of the poll, conducted in 2010-2012. Back then 36% of the interviewed Albanian citizens declared they would like to emigrate.
According to Gallup, one reason why so many Albanians wish to leave their country is to escape endemic unemployment.
Unemployment in Albania stood at 15.2% in 2016, according to official statistics.
Elsewhere in Southeastern Europe, a large part of the citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Moldova, Macedonia and Kosovo too are contemplating emigration.
According to the poll, more than a third of the population of Bosnia and Herzegovina, or 36%, would migrate, which represents a significant increase compared to the 20% potential migrants recorded in the previous edition of the poll.
In Moldova the share of potential migrants has also increased - to 35% from 32% previously.
Macedonia and Kosovo have the same share of potential migrants - 34%.
The poll, which was conducted in 156 countries, identified 700 million potential migrants.
The top desired destination is the US, with 21% of the interviewed saying they would move there, followed by Germany with 6%, Canada, the UK and France - all three with 5%.
According to the poll, the citizens of Africa's Sierra Leone are most willing to emigrate.
