TIRANA (Reuters) – Albania’s soccer team has been branded a “mafia group” by Prime Minister Sali Berisha while the country’s culture minister accused the president of the National Soccer Federation of “selling” two Euro 2008 qualifiers. In a letter addressed to UEFA last month and made public earlier this week, Culture Minister Ylli Pango called upon the sport’s governing body in Europe to investigate “clear suspicions that both matches might have been sold by the president of our National Soccer Federation.” “This is clear evidence that he is using our national soccer team’s matches for his own interests, insulting the feelings of its fans and supporters,” Pango wrote. “Therefore, I kindly invite UEFA to investigate both matches,” he added. Albania lost 4-2 at home to Belarus and 6-1 away to Romania in the last two Euro 2008 qualifiers. Coach Otto Baric resigned after the unsuccessful campaign. Pango’s letter to Gianni Infantino, UEFA’s director of Legal Service and Club Licensing, was released after Berisha said the national team had brought shame on Albanians. “This is a mafia group that tramples upon the flag,” Berisha said on local television. “Let the nation not be represented for a time rather than be represented by a mafia that sells their shirts.” The players defended their reputation and asked Berisha to stop reaching “hasty” conclusions, threatening to sue him if the investigation proved they were not to blame. source After this pass performance, I just knew this national team was not the one that beat Greece back in 9-4-2004..

O Cane. It is politics. Greece got banned by UEFA for similar $hit. The government has tried to controll the Albanian football federation but UEFA threatened a ban, and things got quite for a while. The last 2 loses are just an excuse to restart that $hit again. The truth is that the first game against Belarus was lost because we underestimated the adversary who was beaten by Luxemburg. The last game we ended up playing with nine people in the pitch, and two penalties for Romania. I doubt there was anything mafioso going on.

This sounds like a sheer populism by your prime minister. He takes the moment when people are annoyed by the performance of the team and starts some stupid campaign to improve his personal image.

TIRANA (AFP) –The Albanian government yesterday pledged to root out corruption in professional soccer after top officials in the game were implicated in match-rigging during qualifying for Euro 2008. “The problem is serious because this is not only about ‘selling’ the two final matches of the Euro 2008 qualifiers,” Albanian Culture and Sport Minister Ylli Pango told AFP. “Preliminary probes have revealed that the results of matches in the national league, cups, qualifying and international competitions have also been fixed.” Pango recently addressed accusations from European soccer’s governing body UEFA that Albanian Football Federation President Armando Duka had “sold” matches during qualifying for next summer’s Euro 2008 finals. the plot thickens

Most of the media wrote about match fixing the day after the match. However, no evidence was showed at all. I am not saying that it is absolutely impossible for it to happen, but let's not forget that titles like "the match was sold" does sale a lot of newspapers... Gazeta Shqip, the best albanian newspaper in my opinion (part of Top Media Group(?)), never made such accusations, and I'm very sure they would have found out if a paper like Korrieri was able to find out. Clever trick by the media though. When there's so much anger, people are willing to believe almost anything.
And the PM followed with accusations a little later too, using phrases like 'the mafia is controlling the NT...' - also not mentioning any evidence. You guys do realise that this is the same PM that took our country to the brink of civil war 10 years ago, don't you?! Then the Minister of Sports followed by saying that the director of the National Soccer Federation allowed for those results so we end up with harder/better teams in world-qualifiers, which would mean more money for the federation (through TV rights). This is not logical at all because if that's what the federation wished, then they wouldn't be willing to pay such high wages for the team's coach (wasn't Baric the highest-paid coach in the western balkans?), and teams that are in 4th seat don't pay jack for tv rights... so there's our dear minister making no sense.
Some use the fact that the albanian league has seen cases of match-fixing in the past. What they fail to see is that there's no real connection between the league and the NT.
But how could we lose so badly?! Well, 5hit happens. The game against Belarus was played in rainy conditions (which disfavours us more than the other team because we rely more on technique, and less on physical strength) - just remember how badly we've played in the past when it was rainy. They expected Belarus to be weaker because they lost against Luxemburg (bad assumption - in the following game they beat holland), and perhaps expected Romania to take it easy because they were qualified (and much of it was thanks to us, so perhaps they were wishfully thinking that they would somehow return the favour) whereas Romania punished us for every mistake we made. Another major factor is that Baric was that Baric was penalised by EUFA to not head the team during those two matches - his assistant is hardly the strategist that Baric is.
Don't get me wrong, if the accusations are true, I wish that the maximum penatly is given out. But it is most likely that all this is made-up bull5shit that is pissing off all our NT players who to be fair did quite well during these qualifiers. The captain (Lorik Cana) even wrote an open letter about all this.

That is true (with the exception of the last two matches). I heard that Albania should have probably beaten Holland (or at least got a draw), but Holland was quite lucky. As for the last match: Romania lost the match to Bulgaria, so they didn't want to slacken. Also every match counts for points in terms of seeding, so it is all to play for. But yes, I feel the 6-1 scoreline wasn't fair on the overall match. But Romania's luck has run out and I will be amazed if they make it out of their group at Euro 2008.
