Somalia ‘ready for war’ with Ethiopia over Somaliland and Ethiopia Sea Ports deal
Jan 16, 2024 #MIZIZI #AfricaNews #TopAfricaNews Ethiopia marked the beginning of the new year with reports of an agreement that is poised to create a rocky start for diplomatic relations in the region in 2024. This particular deal has caused dissatisfaction among certain nations, leading them to consider military intervention to thwart it. Somalia stands among these nations, with a senior adviser to the country's president expressing readiness for a potential war with Ethiopia. This recent development has left many people wondering what exactly is the nature of this deal, and what factors have pushed Somalia to the brink of tension.
On January 1, Ethiopia entered into a memorandum of understanding with Somaliland, facilitating the construction of a coastal port. This action has infuriated the government of Somalia, which asserts territorial claims over Somaliland and deems the agreement null and void. “We are pursuing all diplomatic options and I think Ethiopia will come to its senses, but we are ready for a war if Abiy ( Ethiopia’s prime minister) wants a war,” stated the Senior Advisor.
Somali’s Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, speaking in the capital Mogadishu, emphasized the invalidity of the sea access pact signed earlier in the month between Ethiopia and Somaliland. He said that Any Ethiopian intervention in Somali territories would carry consequences.
