Romania Faces Farm Aid Cut 14 11 2007 Bucharest _ The European Commission on Wednesday gave Romania one more month to correct deficiencies in its farm payments systems, but analysts are skeptical that Bucharest will be able to meet the deadline.
In October, the EU executive warned Bucharest that it risks losing more than 100 million euros in annual subsidies unless it corrects serious shortcomings in its agricultural administration systems.
"The Bucharest authorities have said that they have been working flat out for the last month to improve their record, but it is too early to say if they will be able to comply fully with the EU requirements," Ioana Morovan, editor-in-chief of the weekly newspaper "Europeanul" told Balkan Insight.
The Commission wants Bucharest to sort out its computerised livestock database and gather more information on exactly how much land individual farmers own, as its current system for identifying landowners does not make this clear.
Under the terms of Romania’s accession treaty, EU payments to farmers should begin on December 1 and are scheduled to increase from 443 million euros next year to 1,069 million euros in 2013.
