Romania Seeks to Bring Workers Home 14 11 2007 Bucharest _ Romania will step up efforts to keep workers at home in order to respond to domestic labor shortages, Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu said Wednesday.
"At the moment we have a labor force crisis and we should make a common effort to keep workers at home," Tariceanu said after a meeting of Hungarian and Romanian Government representatives in Sibiu, southern Transylvania.
The Romanian government recently announced an initiative aimed at persuading Romanians working abroad to consider coming back home, especially since in some sectors - construction, for example, they can earn more in Romania than in many foreign countries.
Two million Romanians are estimated to be working abroad, mainly in Italy and Spain. Many moved after Romania joined the European Union early this year, taking modestly paid jobs.
Economy Minister Varujan Vosganian said Monday that Romania currently needs around 500,000 extra workers, especially in construction, heavy industry and car manufacturing.
At Wednesday's meeting, Romania and Hungary emphasized the importance of leaving behind historical disputes, and said they would work together in the EU and to promote common and regional interests.
Hungary announced that starting from next year it will open up its labour market fully to Romanian workers. In addition, the two governments announced 15 agreements, including projects in the infrastructure and transport sectors.
