Romanian Orthodox Church condemns publication of Romanian translation of 'Satanic Verses'
The Associated Press Published: December 21, 2007 BUCHAREST, Romania: Romania's influential Orthodox Church has condemned the recent publication of the Romanian translation of "The Satanic Verses." The translation of British writer Salman Rushdie's book was released this week with an initial print run of 5,000. The book offends spiritual values and religious symbols, the church said in a statement late Thursday. "We express our solidarity with the Muslim community," it said. There are 100,000 Muslims in Romania, a country of 22 million. The church, known for its conservative stance said, it was opposed to any literature that offended religious views. More than 80 percent of Romanians are Orthodox Christians. The Satanic Verses was first published in 1988 in Britain. In 1989, Iran's Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini issued a religious edict calling for Rushdie's death and accused him of blasphemy against Islam. The Iranian Embassy in Bucharest said the book should be banned, a call that was criticized by free speech advocates. www.iht.com/articles/ap/2007/12/21/europe/EU-REL-Romania-Satanic-Verses.php

medieval institutions support each other. I was going to say that. One Abrahamic institution covering the other or expression comes to mind like 'similar minds think alike'.

Or maybe it was a tactical move to make things calmer.

^ Or maybe the Romanian Orthodox Church are not hypocrisy and oppose the writings of extremist atheists who call for the destruction of all religions (Sulman Rushdie's personal views seem to support that he wants all religions to cease to exist).

^^ Then they shouldnt read it. Its unfortunate for Islam and Christianity that man now lives in a free world, where ideas and views can be exchanged freely without burnings and trials. The Romanian Orthodox Church should simply look towards its own faithful and attack the book within its own churches.

WTF are blabbing about Melty? The ROC just verbally condemned the publication of this book in the romanian language. It didn`t ask for the books to be burned in the public square like your role-model, adolf hitler, did.
Melty, you see the petals, the leaves, the polen but you always fail to see the flower.

The ROC just verbally condemned the publication of this book in the romanian language. Still shouldnt they deal with much more important things like poverty, social unbelief etc. Except that everybody should be free to read whatever he wants. They remind me of the Bulgarian church that condemned the Da Vinci Code movie. So stuck in the middle ages. They are not where they should be and are where they shouldnt.

When will people learn that democracy works both ways? It`s the DEMOCRATIC RIGHT of the ROC to condemn a book as it is the DEMOCRATIC RIGHT of you or any other person to read or don`t read that book of Rushdie.

I agree with Diur. The Church has all the right to condemn a book it disproves of. Just like any political org. can do the same.

i agree too, that ignorant book has to be banned and instead of stoning the author to death, we should rather lock him up in guatanamo for critizising religion. X2 welcome back annitas , i miss ur funny instigating lol, the forum is boring without annitas. ;D

The Romanian Orthodox Church should simply look towards its own faithful and attack the book within its own churches. Like others have stated they've only made a statement condeming it's publication in Romanian. Furthermore your statement seems contradictyory you say "every man now lives in a free world, wherre ideas and views can be exchange frelly" but then you say the Romanian Orthodox Church should not do this and shouldn't have made this public statement.

^^^ Condemning the writings means that you want to silence it, so people cannot read it. Nobody should "condemn", everyone should be open to it. If the church doesnt like it, it can abstain from reading it, but not attack its publication. Free thinking means that it should be available to the people so that they can decide for themselves. What the church here wants to do is to keep people from it, fearful of the ideas it might spread. See how medieval it all is?

Not necessarily. You can condemn many things, including intellectual property and other artistic work, but not want to forbid it. In this case, I'm not sure if the church would also want to ban the book or merely wanted to make its stand known.

What the church should do is simply reply with a counter. Instead of "condemning"(which shows that the church still relies on dogmatic powers) it could give an intellectual argument to the book. But I wouldnt expect the church to be THAT intellectual. I mean, when has it ever been?

But I wouldnt expect the church to be THAT intellectual. I mean, when has it ever been? Actually. Condemnation is intellectually valid. What isn;t intellectually valid would be the ROC copying what the Iranians did and call for the death of Salman Rushdie. Also. Salman Rushdie by your logic doesn't merit an intellectual response since he condemns religion and calls for it's violent overthrow. Basically he follows the view of Richard Dawkins.

Both use dogma to silence; therefore both are not valid.
Doesnt change anything. The church is still silencing the work with this
