Traditional New Year's scuffle in RomaniaRiot police try to hold villagers wearing fur masks at bay today before the start of the traditional annual confrontation in Ruginoasa, Romania, 400 kilometers north of Bucharest. Villagers from the hills and valleys engage in fights on the last day of every year in a centuries-old ritual that, according to locals, is meant to purge the evil spirits in their community. During the past few years, however, riot police have tried to keep the villagers from fighting each other because serious injuries often occur during the clashes. www.beloblog.com/ProJo_Blogs/newsblog/archives/2007/12/photo_tradition.html

It is a very interesting tradition indeed.

That tradition will stay and the EU, from what I know, have made no references to it. It would be better if the goverment would instead send some dozen ambulances, instead of riotpolice.
Diur, how did that tradition sparked, anyway? It seems to have started around the time the Turks started to leave the country.
Btw, it's a Moldavian local tradition, yet those foreign scumbags keep mentioning Bucharest to identify the location. God damn, what a cursed capital we're having!

I don`t have a clue when and why this tradition started but I think it`s older than the times when the turks left. I know the fight is between two clans, the Valeni (the ones from the valley) and the Deleni (the ones from the hills) and the ones who win organise all the parties next year and have priority to the girls.

I doubt the Turks could leave a country where they were never presents in the first place.

I was trying to poke fun at Jenny; and I never implied they had the country. I implied that they were present there; and to some extent, they were.
