Hello,
Chris Webber, the author of one recent book about the Thracians (The Thracians 700 BC-AD 46 (Men-at-Arms), www.amazon.com/Thracians-700-BC-AD-46-Men-at-Arms/dp/1841763292/) is planning a trip to Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey and Greece in April. He wants to prepare another, much more detailed book about the Thracians. He told me he has got contacts in Bulgaria, who will guide him when, what to see, but he complained he had no luck getting anybody to help him in Romania:
I think he is wrong in saying that the Romanians detest the word "Thracian". Anyway, does anybody of you know a possible contact for Chris? His preliminary travel itinerary for Romania is not very detailed and looks like this:
Sunday 30/03/2008 flight "Arrive Bucharest 15:10 Stay at Kogalniceanu Hotel, includes breakfast, check in 3pm"
Monday 31/03/2008 check out 10am, move to ?
Tuesday 01/04/2008 Museums
Wednesday 02/04/2008 Museums
Thursday 03/04/2008 Car Dobruja
Friday 04/04/2008 Train Sarmizgetusa, Cluj Napoca
Saturday 05/04/2008
Sunday 06/04/2008
Monday 07/04/2008 Train Bulgaria - Black Sea coast Ruse, Varna, Sozopol etc or Sofia

I have had no luck so far in contacting anybody in Romania – I think I have to send a letter and not an email, or not mention the Thracians . The Romanians seem to think that saying the Dacians were Thracian is a Bulgarian plot to take over Romania or something. If there is anything I can do for you while I am in Bulgaria, or if there is somewhere you think I should visit, please let me know. Do you think it would be best to enter Bulgaria from Romania via the coast, and visit the Black Sea cities first, or should I go straight to Sofia? I only want to see the archaeological museum in each city on the coast, I wonder how long that would take? ...
