This is quite interesting. Rather old news. I know Sofia tried to bid for the 2014 games, so this could only be for 2018. I don't know if Bulgaria does also, by know the Serbian government has an interest in developing the area on the Serbian side of the border to be a skiing area to rival Kopaonik regardless of whether or not the plans to host the olympics come for fruitition. www.sofiaecho.com/article/bulgaria-and-serbia-to-apply-jointly-for-winter-olympics-host/id_20831/catid_71Bulgaria and Serbia discuss the opportunity to present a joint candidature to host winter Olympic Games. During his visit to Serbia on February 21 2007 Bulgarian President Georgi Purvanov supported the idea for the construction of a tourism centre in Stara Planina Mountain on the border between the two countries, Serbian newspaper Blic said. Mladan Dinkic, leader of Serbian party G17 Plus, suggested that the two countries could host together Olympic Games. According to Blic, Purvanov assigned to Bulgaria’s Economy and Energy Minister Roumen Ovcharov to launch discussion with Serbia on the execution of the project. The last Olympic Games hosted on The Balkans were in Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Sarajevo in 1986, Bulgarian National Radio (BNR) said. If Bulgaria and Serbia present joint candidature, it would be the first case in which two Balkan countries present a common host application.

I personally don't think this would be accomplished but it is not a bad idea at all. Why not, btw? Considering the fact that Austria, which is a pathetic country in football, will host Euro 2008, both our countries might be given the chance. But it is not just matter of intention but certain infrastructure, facilities, government support and so on.

Their were reports on TV that their is a Serb in America who is from the near the area who would be willing to invest several hundred million euros if this project is seriously considered. However, i think it was just media speculation sinc ethat story mostly appeared in newspapers known for Yellow journalism.

Probably. Otherwise it would be a display of massive co-operation between our coutries, something we are both not known for.

Why not Croatioa and Serbia instead? They've been one country before - much more in common.. and two very strong nations at football. Thank you very much, but I really don't hope so!

Rhezus, if you bothered to read more carefully, you would notice the article is about winter olympics.

Rhezus, if you bothered to read more carefully, you would notice the article is about winter olympics. Serbia hosting Winter Olympics jointly with Croatia. That's a joke. The border with Croatia is basically flat land. Same with Romania. The rest of the border's are for the mst part mountainous. The best areas to develop skiing on the borders is the border with Bulgaria.

Alright.. but you were talking about football and Austria, being a "pathetic country in football"(So fotball was involvet somehow..). Anyway, they are excellent skiers, so I wonder what would happen on that possible OG..

I gave Austria as an example that a country may be a host to a big event without being a power in it. Neither we nor Serbs are power in skiing but we could cope with the organization of an olympics.

Austria is hosting it jointly with the olympics. It's just a sign that in the future small countries like ours will probably not be able to host Olympics or other major events unless it is through joint bids. I mean (although not official policy) it is unlikely that after the disaster at the 2004 games that small counries would be given the task of hosting the olympics by themselves.

I personally think it would be a better idea if Romania and Bulgaria joined for such a project The "conditions" would be more suitable somehow..

Rhezus, you probably notice that geographically the skiing facilities in Bulgaria and Serbia are closer than those in Bulgaria and Romania.

So?.. We have good transportation facilities, lots of money will be involved and most important - some of the events can be held in RO and some in BG.

That's what I'm saying.. This would be BG/RO's chance finaly to build some better connections. Mucho dineros are to be involved. I was just kidding about the good transportation facilities.. (Anyway, not really neccessary such games to be held near the borders).

Skiing faciltites in Serbia and Bulgaria are closer together then Bulgaria and Romania. It would also make more sense to do so between Serbian and Bulgaria because the costs would be smaller. Not only that but Bulgarians living in Serbia (Bosiljegrad and Dimitrovgrad (Tsaribrod in Bulgarian)) would benefit -- and that population tends to be neglected by Serbia (as the south and east of Serbia tend to be) and by Bulgaria (who only seem's interested in the well being of this population for propaganda purposes).

Its much more logical to be in Bg and Ro. I Mean wouldnt there be problems with the border transit if at the time Serbia is not in the EU? Bg and Ro are.

Ioan, don't you think that till the time for this possible event comes, Serbs will be allowed to travel throughout Europe without visa?

Ioan, don't you think that till the time for this possible event comes, Serbs will be allowed to travel throughout Europe without visa? Well its hard to predict it. If we are sure that there wont be problems on the border, the idea doesnt seem bad at all. Still at present Bg and Ro candidature seems much more logical.
