Montenegro PM Sturanovic Resigns Email a friend Save article Print article Increase text size Decrease text size 31 January 2008 Podgorica _ Montenegrin Prime Minister Zeljko Sturanovic resigned on Thursday, on his 48th birthday, because of health reasons.
In a letter to the speaker of parliament, Ranko Krivokapic, Sturanovic said that the medical treatment that he needed to undergo over the next few months will significantly diminish his ability to work.
Sturanovic was diagnosed with a rare tumor of the lung several months ago, but he continued with his duties until Thursday’s announcement.
“The development of Montenegro… objectively requires the full devotion of all, especially those in the most responsible offices, so that our country can continue on its way to Europe", Sturanovic wrote in his letter.
“My wish is to create the best conditions for the government to work at its full capacity and fulfil its demanding agenda, while I dedicate myself to my health”, he said.
Sturanovic became Montenegro’s prime minister in November 2006.
His resignation means a new government will need to be formed.
Until a new prime minister is elected, the current government will continue in a caretaker capacity.
There has been speculation in the Montenegrin media that Sturanovic’s resignation from the post of prime minister may signal the return to that office of ex-Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic, a former president and current leader of the main governing party, the Democratic Party of Socialists.
