TIR drivers complain that Bulgaria's recognition of Kosovo may drastically raise the cost of their trips to Europe
The Bulgarian haulage companies worry that they will lose hundreds of thousands of levs (1euro=1.95levs) after Bulgaria recognizes Kosovo independence.
Presently, the larger part of the TIRs heading for ports in Croatia and Western Europe travel across Serbia.
The detour will lengthen the trip by some 200-300 kilometers. Apart from that the vehicles will have to conform with the different customs requirements and restrictions on the tonnage which are in force in Romania and Hungary.
"The laws in the EU forbid crossing of the EU territory by the heaviest trucks," explained Rossen Dimitrov of the Bulgarian Association of the Transport Companies.
This means that these heavy vehicles will definitely need to travel across Serbia.
According to well-informed, only the customs documents processing of a TIR travelling for Croatia via Romania and Hungary will cost between 100 and 150 euro more.
The bus tickets for Europe will also go up in price due to Kosovo recognition. The companies in this business warn that the tickets for Western Europe will grow in price by 10% to 40%.
The transit of Bulgarian via across Serbia may become impossible due to the heated relations between the two countries.
Thus, the buses will have to travel through Romanian territory. The longer way will automatically raise the cost of tickets. Apart from that, the tickets will become more expensive due to different fares Romania introduces in such situations.

Bulgaria Tourism Boss: We Sealed Loss of Serbian Tourists by Recognizing Kosovo
21 March 2008, Friday
The Head of Bulgaria's State Agency for Tourism Aneliya Krushkova declared Friday that the recognition of independent Kosovo likely meant a permanent loss of almost 200 000 Serbian tourists. Photo by Yuliana Nikolova (Sofia Photo Agency) | buy photo | After Bulgaria recognized independent Kosovo, it has no chances of getting back the Serbian tourists that it lost with the introduction of visas as it joined the EU on January 1, 2007.
This was announced Friday by the Chair of Bulgaria's State Agency for Tourism Aneliya Krushkova before the Bulgarian private Darik Radio.
Krushkova also stated the owners of small hotels were going to bear the brunt of the step of the Bulgarian government since the Serbs used to stay primarily in them.
"We used to have about 186 000 Serbian tourists. Last year the drop was 74%, and I cannot make a prognosis how many are going to come this year", Krushkova said.
She added she hoped a time would come when the Serbs were going to start visiting Bulgaria again but that this would hardly happen in 2008 because of Kosovo's recognition.
Krushkova also stressed that the route of tourists from Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic visiting Bulgaria goes through Serbia.
She recommended that Bulgarians traveling through Serbia should plan their route very carefully.

Im actually glad this is happening to the tourism and I hope they suffer from lower numbers of visitors anyway(though the western europeans keep being on the rise). After all, this massive building activity is turning the whole coast into a concrete monster. With Serbians its more to do with visas though.

I read somewhere that Bulgaria is the fourth biggest investor in Serbia. I was quite shocked and don't know if it true but I don't think our pathetic government ever considered the interests of the Bulgarians in Serbia. Miserable socialists and greedy yellows. I don't even accuse the Turkish party. It was predictable.
