Sofia Citizens - Most Xenophobic BulgariansPublished on: 04.04.2008, 10:44 Author: Kristalina Ilieva The more DPS (Movement for Rights and Freedoms - the political party of the Turkish ethnic minority in Bulgaria) exercises power, the more decreases the negative attitude towards the Turks in Bulgaria. This statement comes by a report of the National Council for Cooperation in Ethnic and Demographic Matters. According to the document's conclusion the Bulgarian society early learned the way to overcome the negative stereotypes towards Turkish population, which are absolutely political. The decision was exactly the including of the Turkish minority into democratic representation through political party (DPS), which to exercise political power. Though, according to the report, parallel with the decrease of Bulgarians' prejudices towards Turks after 1999 year, the prejudices of Bulgarian towards Romas did increased. 30% of the Romas are convinced they are discriminated and claim they have been beaten or robbed by Bulgarians or Turks. 72% of the Bulgarians consider that the Gypsies look for social aids because they are lazy, as the Romas themselves support the position, that 90% of them look for social aids because they lack a job. Another conclusion of the report is the most xenophobic people in Bulgaria live in the capital Sofia. Most intolerant is the attitude towards the Romas in Sofia's district ‘Faculteta' and the highest rate of tolerance was observed towards the Roma inhabitants of Sliven city's district ‘Nadevjda'. international.ibox.bg/news/id_342268076

Jenny, this is a completely false statement. DPS contributed most to the negative attitude to the BG Turks. It does not behave as a Bulgarian political party, but as a Turkish one. But Bulgarians are not that stupid. Even these from Ataka do not put the blame on the Bulgarian Turks, most of whom are loyal BG citizens. The hostility is directed to the Turkish state. And it is growing very fast.

Very interesting. These are both Gypsy neighbourhoods. May be in one of them the Gypsies are intolerant towards themselves, and in the other one they are tolerant ;D

it must be said that the general behaviour of Gypsies leads to the discrimination which exists against them.
the Gypsies are unintegrated in most of the countries they live in, not just BG.

I don't know a single country where they have managed to integrate as a social group. Imo, this is never going to happen.

The same survey concluded, that the more educated Bulgarians have more prejudices against the gypsies than the less educated - news.netinfo.bg/?tid=40&oid=1182834I have the same impression The Bulgarian article doesn't mention this ridisulous thing. They probably knew, that if they mention it, nobody would believe any of the conclusions from the survey.
