"Bulgaria manufactures Kalashnikovs illegally" 28 April 2008 | 17:40 | Source: Sofia News Agency SOFIA -- Bulgaria is among the countries illegally producing Kalashnikov, AK-47, automatic rifles, Izhmash JSC said.
Many countries continue to produce the weapons, although their license contracts expired after the breakup of the USSR, said Aleksandr Zavarzin, responsible for the Russian manufacturer's international operations.
More than 10 factories across the world are making AK-47 rifles without license – among them Bulgaria, Romania, Poland, Israel, and China, Zavarzin added.
The last production licenses issued had expired in the 1990s and Russia did not extend them.

It's the Russians' damn fault for handing out AK-47s like hot bread all over the world.

The Russians were the first who stole the design of the German's StG 44: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sturmgewehr_44Our only fault is that the Bulgarian modification of AK 47 is better and cheaper than the Russian original. And also, more than 50 years have passed since AK 47 was "invented". This is more than enough for any license regime.

It still says in the Wiki article that the AK is "mechanically very different" from the StG gun.
But yeah, I dont exactly see why should Russia have like some sort of eternal patent over it.
