Belgrade – Montenegro PM Milo Djukanovic was the guarantor of the free travel of the tobacco boss Stanko Subotic Cane to Moscow. As ‘Blic’ learns exclusively, Subotic left for Russia twenty days ago with the oral guarantee by Montenegro PM that he would not be arrested there.
How Djukanovic’s guarantee failed, it is not known at the moment.
‘Either Djukanovic deceived Subotic or those that guaranteed Subotic’s freedom to Montenegrin PM changed their opinion in the meantime. It is not very likely that Djukanovic has just like that given up one of his closest friends and long-term business associates’, our source says.
Serbia Police do not know what was the business that Subotic traveled to Russia for nor who he met there with.
‘It is quite possible that he met there with Marko Milosevic and Mirjana Mrkovic, also suspects in cigarettes smuggling that got asylum in Russia several months ago’, our source adds.
Our Police also do not know what Subotic’s destination leaving Moscow was, although there are only two countries he could possibly travel to: one is Switzerland in which he resides, keeps his wealth and has large influence, or Montenegro where he enjoys protection from Djukanovic directly.
The connections between Subotic and Djukanovic date from 1997 when after assassination of then Serbia deputy police minister Radovan Stojicic Badza, Subotic moved his business to Montenegro. At that time he already had a contact established with the representatives of then Montenegrin authority, Djukanovic and Svetozar Marovic and some Montenegrin businessmen.
Possible delay of court trial
Court trial against Cane’s group in which there are 15 people charged with cigarette smuggling worth 56 million German Marks and USD 8 million has been scheduled for May 19 at the Special Court. However, the beginning of the trial could be postponed until Subotic’s extradition to Serbia.
Lawyer: Subotic collecting in Russia proofs of his innocence
Radoslav Tasic, lawyer of Stanko Subotic forwarded a statement to ‘Blic’ yesterday in which it is said that ‘the arrest of his client at the moment while he was travelling and collecting proofs of his innocence is the result of the same political kitchen that cooked the charges against Subotic’.
‘If the Russian authorities extradites him, we shall soon attend the finale that the regime wanted: the Milosevices shall be free, their friends shall be in power in Belgrade and Subotic, one of those who took part in ousting of that regime, shall be in prison’, lawyer Tasic said.
