Hello.its.ME

!The first application for Montenegro’s new .ME domain was for hello.its.me. The application was filed on May 1. Applications were restricted to Montenegrin citizens and companies between May 1 – 6.
Realising that .ME domains would be of interest to people around the world, Montenegro decided to waive its right to restrict its .ME domain extension to Montenegrin citizens and companies. Any company in the world can apply for a .ME domain during the sunrise period for applications between May 6 – 20.
Me-net, one of three companies holding the rights to sell the domains, will not reveal the number of applications received until May 20.
Should more than one individual or corporate entity apply for the same domain, there will be an auction. EnCirca, a domain name registrar headquartered in Boston, is hoping to make a small fortune off the sale and claims to have rolled out a multi-million dollar marketing campaign.
In a press release, EnCirca President Thomas Barrett explains why his company is excited about .ME domains, ".ME elevates the social networking craze to a new level, as .ME offers real personalization of domains. For instance, why not register follow.ME for the born leader? Or perhaps, listento.ME for the incessant blogger? EnCirca is excited to be part of this strategic campaign and we applaud Montenegro for making the most of their virtual resources."
EnCirca made no mention of the fact that online pornographers will likely have the greatest interest in .ME domains. It is widely assumed that pornographers will wage bidding wars for a number of domains. Whether or not such bidding wars will drive prices up into the six or even seven figure range remains to be seen. Once upon a time, in the halcyon days of the first Internet boom, certain domains sold for seven and even eight figures.
".ME will be a great marketing tool for businesses and individuals looking to differentiate themselves on the Internet,” says Barrett, who adds a little advice for potential bidders, “To avoid possible trademark infringement, trademark owners should protect their trademarks during the sunrise period."
Procedures and rules for registration can be found at www.domen.me
The base price for a .ME domain is 110 euros, paid annually - an extraordinarily high price considering .com domains can be purchased for as little as 5 euros per year.
