UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Croatia and Costa Rica were elected on Tuesday to the U.N. Security Council for 2008-09 after their respective rivals, the Czech Republic and the Dominican Republic, pulled out after two rounds of voting. Croatia and Costa Rica overwhelmingly won the required two-thirds majority of votes from the 192-member General Assembly in a formal third ballot in which they were the only candidates for the two nonpermanent seats still vacant. Earlier, unopposed Libya, Vietnam and Burkina Faso had won non-permanent seats for 2008-09 in the first ballot. ;D

Croatia will be directly involved when it comes to discuss the hague's closing strategy. This is good news. We have the ability now to:
1. Ensure the hague closes on time ie. 2008 2. Transfer trials which have not yet started ie. Gotovina to domestic courts 3. Ensure that international justice catches up to Mladic, Karadzic, Hadzic, even after the hague closes its doors. I believe the above three options, number 2 above all, are of utmost importance to Croatia's national interests.

^ The Croatian Government has a say in Kosovos status now, a direct say. It has the power to veto propositions of the likes of the United States, Russia, and China, not to mention the rest of the world.

I guess we now have the power to influence things in BiH for the better!
Ensuring that the High Rep's office stays on in BiH in particular.

The position is mostly ceremonial. The 5 veto holders dictate everything.

^^ Someones obviously jealous ;D Croatia would not have spent the last 8 years trying to get into the security council, if the position was so insignificant as you would have us believe. By the way ... we appreciate serbia's vote.
