Police 'Had Role in Macedonia Poll Fraud'

Police sealed the area of Sunday's shootout in Skopje`s Cair neighborhood05 June 2008 Skopje _ Police officers played a role in the irregularities reported in Macedonia's election, the interior minister claims.
However Gordana Jankulovska emphasised that they acted on their own and were not organised by the state.
Jankulovska told media on Wednesday that they have been arrested and said she does not feel responsible for the acts of individual members of the force.
“The political leaders are those who have failed because their party members and sympathisers did not respect the recommendations given by the political leaderships and by the international community,” Jankulovska said.
On Sunday, on the day of snap general elections, a series of armed incidents and irregularities occurred in the mainly ethnic Albanian populated parts of the country leaving one dead and several wounded. Read more at balkaninsight.com/en/main/news/10628
The police said they have so far apprehended over 40 people suspected of being involved in the incidents.
The violence led to a largely negative report on the conduct of free and fair elections from the Organisation of Security and Cooperation in Europe and could seriously hamper the country’s hopes of securing a firm date for the start of European Union accession talks this autumn. The EU has said that the poll reruns in the areas marred by violence and fraud must be fair and democratic in order for the country to win a reprieve.
