Croatia Heads UN SC Counter-Terrorism Committee
Croatia will most likely take over presidency of the Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee at one of the sittings in 2008.
Croatia will start its 2-year membership as a non-permanent UN Security Council member on January and will most likely take over presidency of the Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee at one of the first sittings, diplomatic sources in New York state.
One-year presidency is in question of one of subsidiary bodies of UN Security Council, which includes surveillance of applying the 1373 Resolution, passed not long after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack on USA. The resolution requires UN members to criminalise aiding terrorist activities, deny financial aid and shelter to terrorists and share information on groups that are planning terrorist attacks.
- The fact Croatia has been entrusted to run this committee is a great compliment, as this is one of the greatest and most sensitive ones – the diplomatic source assessed.
The Counter-Terrorism Committee includes 15 Security Council members. In 2007, Panama presided it, along with three subcommittees within the body Peru, Qatar and the Republic of South Africa.
Other UN Security Council subsidiary bodies include the Peacebuilding Commission, Sanctions Committee Compensation Commission, Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Committee etc.
Mladineo and officials already gaining experience
Although the announced personnel reinforcements for Croatia`s Permanent mission with the UN are not there yet, due to extended period of forming the new cabinet, the mission with about 10 diplomats has finalised all its preparations for Croatia participating in the UN SC work.
Croatia`s permanent representative at the UN, Mirjana Mladineo, and officials of the Croatian mission have participated in UN SC sittings since November 19 and of their committees, without a right to vote, gaining experience about the wok and decision-making in the Council.
The last regular UN SC sitting of the year was held on Friday, December 21, at which the Middle East was discussed, but the Council met at an outstanding sitting on Thursday, December 27 after the assassination of former Pakistani PM Benazir Bhutto, severely condemning the attack.
Croatia was selected a member of the Security Council on October 16 this year. Read more abotu the Security Council in the article: UN Security Council – Guarding World Peace.
