Croatia-Slovenia Friendship Over?
If Slovenia hinders Croatia’s access to the EU, the friendship between Croatia and Slovenia will be over, President Mesic said.
ZAGREB, CROATIA – Croatian President Stjepan Mesic said on Thursday that if Slovenia hindered Croatia’s accession into the European Union, it would be detrimental to furute relations between the two countries and one could say that Croatian-Slovene friendship would be over.
- Should be find a solution with Slovenia, with which we generally have good relations, it will solidify our friendly ties even more – Mesic said, adding that the Croatian and Slovene diplomacy had to act.
- We should stop flexing out muscles and begin solving problems using reason and common sense – the president said.
Asked what he expected of tomorrow’s talks with Slovenian President Danilo Tuerk, Mesic said the talks would be informal ‘and when there are informal talks then more can be done than in diplomacy’.
- We must find a solution if we want to get EU membership in a short period of time, which is of vital importance for Croatia – Mesic stressed. Since Croatia will certainly adopt European regulations within two or three years’ time, Croatia should survive those two years in such a way that nobody gets humiliated and that the most constructive and most rational solution is reached, he said.
Asked whether he expected the Military Ordinary, Jurij Jezerinac, to extend an invitation to him to join the military pilgrimage to Lourdes, as he had extended to Prime Minister Ivo Sanader, Mesic said that he was the commander in chief of the Croatian Armed Forces and it would be logical that he be invited to anything involving the Croatian army, including the pilgrimage organised by Jezerinac.
The prime minister is not in the command chain and Bishop Jezerinac knows that. But since he is making the mistakes, let the Vatican deal with him because ‘I just do not have the patience for him anymore’, Mesic said.
