Rupel: Slovenia Supports Croatia’s EU Accession
Foreign affairs ministers Gordan Jandrokovic and Dimitrij Rupel held a very positive and constructive meeting.
MUNICH, GERMANY - Croatian Foreign Affairs minister Gordan Jandrokovic and his Slovene counterpart Dimitrij Rupel have held a very positive and constructive meeting, in their opinion, on Saturday in Munich, which was contrary to recent, tense, bilateral relations. They have announced a new dynamic in the relationship between the two countries and their efforts to find solutions for open issues.
- We have discussed several open issues, but mostly the negotiating process. To be precise, the relations between Croatia and the EU. Ever since the beginning, Slovenia has been supportive of Croatia`s path towards the EU and this has never changed – Rupel said, currently presiding over the EU Council of Ministers.
- Slovenia wants Croatia to become a member of the European Union and to remove all obstacles and difficulties as soon as possible – the Slovene minister pointed out.
Jandrokovic expressed exceptional satisfaction with such support from Slovenia, assessing it “as a sign that there is good will on both sides to solve the open issues”.
The head of Croatia's diplomacy said the protected ecological fishery zone was also discussed, currently the greatest problem in relations of the two countries. Jandrokovic said there is willingness on both sides for the issue to be solved, pointing out that certain steps will be taken in that direction in the upcoming period.
Croatian President: Solution is possible
Croatian President Stjepan Mesic said on Saturday that the border disagreement with Slovenia should be solved by The Hague International Court of Justice and that Croatia would accept any decision it reaches.
- The situation is intensified now that Slovenia presides over the European Union, and this is not a good thing – Mesic said, adding that this is a “bilateral matter which can be solved”.
