As I said before, they flip flop. They will only follow what the EU says.
Mesic doesn't seem to have his own opinions about the matter.
We have laid down already. Pity. So much for Croatian independance.

I for one am proud that Croatia will be amongst those nations to recognise the suffering of the Kosovar people and in turn recognise their quest for independence!

I think it would be best for Croatia to be neutral on the situation, that way it would keep us out of all future conflicts within the Balkans. We are one of the more stable nations in the Balkans, and it would be nice for us to continue that trend. If you show the international community that you are responsible, moreso to the west, they give you special little perks (such as economic aid, lands, etc etc.).
BUT.. Croat politians are not smart enough to play the field.

Not really. That is not going to keep us out of any conflicts, well, NATO led conflicts. By choosing NATO you are choosing sides, and that means that Croatia will be a target for several anti-NATO alliances/nations (Such as Iran, Al-Qaeda Network and members of SCO).
We are already in Afghanistan as per NATO/EAPC. There are 328 Croat Soldiers down there, and as of April 2008, 200 more will be put in place. These are mostly De-Mining teams and Special Forces Commandos that take and will take part in securing the borders and border crossings between Afghanistan and the Waziristan (Northern Tribal Provinces of Pakistan) area.

This is a gay response from Mesic and co. It is obvious that the Croat politicians are pro Kosovo independence, but are trying to hide behind the EU to explain their resoning for recognising Kosovo. Why, maybe they are afraid of upsetting Serbia or appearing biased?
Its transparent and pretty sad how obviously spineless the leaders are. They should say what they really think and have a voice for themselves.

Maybe they think that being the bitch state will pay off. And most of the times it does. They stand up for some things, but not for others. I have no idea why.

Trade, minority's and a image of not being the first, it is actualy a very wise move by him and his government, Imagine this scenario.. if for some reason the declaration is reversed and Croatia was among the first to recognise it would have harmed bilateral cooperation and trade and etc etc.

How is it in our national interests? To me, Kosovo has nothing to do with Croatia.

^^ Well first and foremost to ensure stability in the region. The status quo was unsustainable and a decision on Kosova's status needed to be reached as soon as possible.
Secondly ... in terms of economy, investment etc. Kosova is just as important to Croatia's economy as are the other countries in the vicinity.
We also have a moral obligation to the Albanians for their contribution in our homeland war.

In terms of economy and investment, Serbia is more important to Croatia (it borders Croatia directly and it has more economic clout than Kosovo with its lack of any infrastructure and economic development).
Secondly, the Albanian contribution to the 'homeland war' is negligible, a few Albanian volunteers were not difference makers.
The reality of the matter is Croatia will consider its own interests. Its primary interests lie with entering the EU and avoiding instability in the region. Upsetting Belgrade is a bigger threat to stability in the region that upsetting Kosovo Albanians. Nevertheless, acting in line with the EU is the safe approach that is in line with promoting both accession and stability in the region, which is why Croatia will be a follower not an initiator here.

It wasn't " a few" Mapko.... it was "hundreds". This has previously been documented before by Croatian officials.... Kosovo rightfully deserves Croatian backing as Kosovo backed Croatian independence back in the 1990's and so did Albania.
