UN calls on Israel to halt demolition of Palestinian homes

UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations on Tuesday called on Israel to immediately halt forced evictions and demolitions of Palestinian homes in East Jerusalem, warning that as many as 60,000 people there may be at risk of forced evictions, demolitions and displacement.
Israeli authorities demolished the homes of six Palestinian families - 26 people, including 10 children - in East Jerusalem on Tuesday. This brings the number displaced through forced evictionsor house demolitions in the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt) to 600, half of them children, since the beginning of the year, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported.
At least 500 more have been affected by partial demolitions of their homes or livelihoods, the office said.
"Such actions run counter to international law and have a serious and long-term negative impact on Palestinian families and communities," OCHA said. "The UN reiterates its call for an immediate and unconditional halt to such actions and urges the State of Israel to protect the civilian population in oPt from further displacement and dispossession."
Israel occupied the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem, in the 1967 war and annexed the latter in a move not recognized internationally. According to Israeli authorities house demolitions are carried out on homes that have been built without official building permits, rendering them "illegal."
But, OCHA said, "lack of adequate planning combined with strict administrative requirements and high fees makes it extremely difficult for Palestinian residents to obtain such permits, leaving them no choice but to build 'illegally' to provide shelter for their families. Palestinian families who move outside the municipal boundaries risk losing their Jerusalem ID (identity) cards, and with it the right to live in and access the city."
According to conservative estimates, as many as 60,000 Palestinians in East Jerusalem may be at risk of forced evictions, demolitions and displacement.
"Many others are facing mounting pressure to leave the city as a result of extensive physical, legal and administrative restrictions that affect every aspect of their daily lives," OCHA concluded.

absolutely amazing that israel can do these things, and all the UN can say is please dont do this.
if this was croatia doing this to its serb population, we would be threatened with sanctions and maybe even zagreb being bombed by the west, yet israel is freely allowed to do what it wants without consquences.
but what really bugs me in cokksukkers from brussels have the audacity to say that israel is more european than croatia, and that they are a.
so basically they enjoy all the benefits of a european union member, like free trade among memeber states etc, but without being part of the european union.
forget the fact that they are in the middle east, and that they continue to violate the human rights of palestinians to this day.
the european union is a fukking joke. states dont join the union based on merit, but just for political reasons that be deemed important to brussels.
like for egsample romania and bulgaria somehow managing to join the european union before croatia, despite the fact that their countries are ten times more poorer and corrupt than croatia, but some how they manage to join the union, and croatia is criticized for corruption, and told it cant enter until corruption has been wiped out.
yes, there is corruption in croatia, but no more than there is in poland, slovakia, hungary and greece. but bulgaria and romania are by far the most corrupt countries in europe.
its all political. bulgaria and romania were allowed to join because they're close to russia, so they want to make a buffer zone between EU and russia, aswell as greece being joined by land with the rest of the european union.
it seems to be that every time croatia makes the hard decisions required by croatia to join the european union, there is always something else brought up that croatia needs to do first in order to join. this issue with slovenia on the border dispute , i think is instigated by brussels to drag time on croatia joining the EU.
after this issue is solved, they will find something else.
me personally im am happy that brussels is doing this, coz i dont want croatia to join the EU.
the reason why i think they do this is because croatia has no strategic imporantance to brussels, and we are not rich with oil, gas and gold, so because of this brussels drags its feet in letting croatia join the EU, because they want to deterr turkey from joining the european union, so thats why croatia is constantly being squeezed by brussels. they want to scare turkey into thinking it will be too hard for them to make the reforms.
why brussels dont want turkey in the EU? well thats simple, because they are a muslim nation of like 70 million people, and they dont want hundreds of thousands if not millions of muslim migrants coming to western europe for economic reasons.
with that being said,
fukk javier solana, fukk brussels and fukk the european union
