so true Herrschaft ! I don't think it's a European Islam, it's that different ethnic groups adapt to the Islamic religion accordingly to their own culture, that's why an Arab Muslim is different from a Indonesian Muslim, etc. They have their own interpretations of it. Thanks Mysia, i been fine, bit busy latest traveling around. Now Preparing for a new exhibition soon in Stockholm. ;D

The legend of father Tomorri is one of the oldest in Albania and dates centuries before Chistianity and islam.

That is not culture buddy. It is religion disguising itself as culture. If you are secure enough in your Greekness or in your orthodoxy you do not need crosses and religious icons in school walls. This is not hard to understand. Religion in Greece has to entrench itself with ethnicity and state in order to survive, so that you and your people make your payments to the church and so that those lazy fat a$$ priests can make a great living by not even lifting a finger.
Also while there are plenty of atheists in Albania; I think most people are deist more than anything else. For those of you that don't know what it means I'll explain. That means that they include the possibility that there might be a supernatural being but such being doesn't answer to prayers. It also means recognizing that all these man-made organized religions are just fairy tales. At best they are self-serving institutions that through made up fairy tales want to further their agenda; that is get rich while doing nothing. So while the average Albanian will tell you he's christian or muslim (I do that too), he'll be the first one to tell you what B.S religions are and how rich a certain priest or hoxhe has gotten since they assumed the position. This is a very important fact, that you don't find occurring at as high frequency as in Albania on the vast majority of religious countries. Again the very fact that we Albanians have the clear mindset to see what a complete B.S is having religious parephenilia hanging on school walls while the Greeks are so confused and parrot what they've been told about church and state, church and ethnicity and church and culture is very telling. We are not like that; religion does not own our thinking process like that.

We dont want to be free from religous symbols. That doesnt mean we are religous...it just means we dont want to conform to the politcal correct agenda of what mainstream thinks is good for us. Screw em...we dont want to be " enlightened ". As far as priests are concerned you probably dont know that we are the first to critisize them. How they dont pay taxes and live fairly well. Hell, you have greeks cursing the church like its the devil himself..;D But we still go on xmas, easter and holidays

There are alot of atheists in Albania (proper), I also sense theres a large section who might believe in 'Zoti', but dont follow any religious sect.

There are alot of atheists. Even when people saying they are Atheist they still believe in God. Atheist (Ateist) is pure Albanian word which that means There is the Only One Holy God. Ate+ist (Atheos) Ate=Father (God) ist=is Truly God Is He and *HE always will be Myself, Mysia JESUS The Messiah !!!

I personally think, from observation, that Albania's atheists come from two principal groups: Bektashi and Orthodox. Both come from southern Albania and both tended to have a high amount of Socialist influence and were pretty much the two chief groups who dominated Albania's communist politics. From experience, northern Albanians, whether Sunni or Catholic, tend to abhor Atheism as an ingredient of socialism and communist repression. Even if they are not religious, they cling to their faith because "if you don't believe in anything then you are nothing."Furthermore, for the Catholics, their religion is strongly intertwined with their resistance to the Ottomans; thus Catholicism is strongly intertwined with their conception of themselves and who they are. With the Sunnis too their faith was so repressed by the Communist elite and since many of them come from lower backgrounds then it is far far more rare to see any real Sunni Atheists.

The largest group come come from Middle Albania....mainly Tirana which has experienced a high amount of inter-religious marriages.

Define "middle Albania". The territory is historically Sunni heartland. The descendants of the urbanite Communist period, I would say yea, the rurals who have just recently flooded into the city... I would say no.

Lots of bull$hit there. I speak personally. My roots are from the north and catholic on one side of the family. Guess what? They're more hardcore atheists than the south muslim side of the family; who are atheists as well but a little more moderate.

You can cite exceptions, Im speaking of feelings in general. In all of my experiences with Malsor, they almost always have some sort of devotion to their faith. Even if they are not really religious they hold tight their faith and consider themselves "survivors" of the Ottoman Empire.
