A Greek professor of linguistics at Cambridge University has been credited with identifying an endangered Greek dialect which is spoken in a remote mountainous region in northeastern Turkey and is believed to be a “linguistic gold mine” because of its close similarities to ancient Greek.
The significance of the Romeyka dialect was highlighted by Dr Ioanna Sitaridou, director of studies in linguistics at Queen’s College, following fieldwork in the area around Trabzon, on Turkey’s Black Sea coast. In a short film about her research, Sitaridou said the dialect was unique.
“Romeyka is a living language preserving structures only to be found in Classical Greek, which has been dead for more than 2,000 years,” she remarked. “What these people are speaking is a variety of Greek far more archaic than other forms of Greek spoken today.”
Sitaridou said religion was a major reason behind the dialect’s survival. The Romeyka speakers are devout Muslims and were therefore exempt from the large-scale population exchange between Greece and Turkey that took place in 1923, she said.
The Cambridge linguist’s research has involved trips to villages near the Black Sea (or Pontus) where Romeyka is spoken, where she has mapped the grammatical structures and variations in use. Information is gathered using audio and video recordings of the villagers telling stories.
The ultimate aim of the research is to explain how Pontic Greek evolved. “We know that Greek has been continuously spoken in Pontus since ancient times and can surmise that its geographic isolation from the rest of the Greek-speaking world is an important factor in why the language is as it is,” Sitaridou said.
But the dialect’s survival is at risk due to waves of emigration from Trabzon and the influence of the dominant Turkish-speaking majority. With as few as 5,000 speakers left in the area, Romeyka could soon be “more of a heritage language than a living vernacular,” Sitaridou said.

Only 5000 speakers left, fast better record and standardize this language, then look for constitutional rights in Turkey or something.
Interesting though

In a way, these 5,000 are holding on to their Greek heritage by speaking the language that was taught them generation after generation. We have to give them some credit. Speaking so negatively about them because they are Muslim is so un-ORTHODOX!!

Speaking so negatively about them because they are Muslim is so un-ORTHODOX!! becoming a muslim during the Ottoman times was the greatest proof of your obeisance to the Top Kapi. For Turks it was one of the dilemma they put in rebelous gaours... sunet or death...they preferred sunet. You became an Osman whatever language you speak, and your ethnic background had small importance, or at all... Its not about that they're not Orthodox, cardinal Bessarion or even the Great Vamvakaris were Catholics and are as Greeks as all. Greek history must not forgive...

I cant imagine Albanians doing that to our Arbresh and Arvanaites what you do, begging for some attention by Arvanites is much more pathetic and sick...and no Albo really cares about Arvanites and their language, Albos simply view them as targets of their nationalism... with such success as rexy would have if he tried to make Monica Belluci his gkomena... we don't need to claim anyone, let all decide what they are, even if they(tourkopontioi) decided many generations before while allying with Osman baba and slaughtering and pillaging the christian Greek villages in bigger scale from tourkomongols...just like muslims Albos fought like dogs their christian co-arnavuds... the difference is that in the Greeks(and Bulgarians case) that the converts were a tiny minority that couldn't had any serious impact in our nation in contrast to Albos who massively osmanized themselves...

you urinate on your own blood we don't need the Arvanitis -----the Arvanitis need us /remember that I respect them as the children of the nazi collaborators... And these specific ones in Pontos, which are much more than 5.000 btw, simply speak Pontic Greek, nothing special about it, hundreds of thousands Greeks speak that dialect in Greece... come on, albos are ready to blow any Arvanitis for a simple ...declaration of distant affinity...
