The Greek-Serbian 'bond' is the biggest sham.. the people who established it were driven by greed, politics, and bad intentions.
The most idiotic thing about it is that it is based on some supposed and highly emphasized "Christian Orthodox Brotherhood". This bit here is discussed in such regard as if Serbs and Greeks are the only Orthodox peoples in the Balkans.
The formation of this 'bond' resulted in the terrorizing of other Christian Orthodox populations. The irony of it all is that the Muslim Turks had more respect for these populations in comparison to the people who represented this Serb-Greek Orthodox union.

No one actually believe in this "brotherhood" apart from few football fans and ultra-hardcore nationalists. By this said it certainly doesn't mean we are hostile toward Greek or that we treat them with disrespect, but if we had to choose between Macedonia vs Greece or Bulgaria vs Greece we would definitively choose the 1st ones

You guys ( Bulgarians) should go Catholic. Then the Greco-Serb 'alliance' will really find out why it was a bad idea ignoring the millions of Bulgarian Orthodox Christians. It will also strengthen your bond with non-Oriental Europe and not be looked upon as 'backwards' and 'Soviet satillites.' I'm just kidding though. Personally I'm not religious. It would be pretty interesting though.

During the Second Bulgarian Empire, after Bulgaria gained it's independence from the East Roman Empire, Tsar Kaloian actually considered that. I don't remember exactly, but I think there was a brief period when he had aligned the Bulgarian church with the Pope.
Basically he wanted to legitimize his crown by gaining recognition from an official authority, it seems the Pope was more than happy to recognize Kaloian's authority in the region.
Personally, I'm not entirely certain about this whole approach to Europe. It seems that after communism, Bulgaria was chasing the EU, and now we're finally a part of it. However, I'm not sure if this was/is the best path for my people.
EU, 'backward' notions, 'Soviet satellites' or whatever else is all BS in the grand scheme of things. But at the same time, it seems the EU has become an integral part of life for Europe in general.. seems like it's a stepping stone toward something better, I'm just not sure if that "something" that is supposedly better will ultimately be better for small players like Bulgaria.
The most important thing for Bulgarians, in my opinion, is to get our shit together and re-establish a firm family oriented identity like it was before. From this aspect, I kindda envy the Serbs and the Albanians.
Now it seems our country and culture are becoming Westernized, and even Americanized, and I don't like that.. at the time being, I cannot see any long term benefits to this.

Perhaps Catholicism would've been better afterall Ivo. It would certainly solve the Macedonian question for you guys as I would guess that at least 2/3rds of modern Macedonians would be Catholic ( or maybe even Islamic Bulgarians) had Bulgaria stayed with the Pope. But in Orthodoxy you have neighboring Serbs competing for the faith of your brethren. But hey lets face it , this is why religion is such bullshit right? And Bulgaria is backward. I mean I don't know how else to put it. That doesn't mean the people are bad. The people are just as smart , perhaps smarter , than any of their European neighbors. Its just that your society has been raped , castrated , and is slow at dropping some of the bad habits picked up during Debulgarianization and communism. I was in your country and aside from the places where the few tourists would visit , i felt like it was third world and there was this awful smell in the air like the sewage system got clogged up in most of the west side of Sofia. I go out in the country side and I see uncut grass , unpaved roads , old dusty ugly grey cracking flats and people using their window shutters for clothes dryers. Its like people wont take the initiative and start fixing up your country in the private sector. Its like everyone is waiting for the government to do something and that's some of those bad habits that need to be dropped. The Bulgarians I met were so nice and every bit as hospitable as in my country. They didn't ask for much and gave so much just for the pleasure of having your company. Big hearts there and its sad that the situation isn't better. I'd pick them as best friends over many pieces of crap I see in the West though. Look at the bright side Ivo , it seems there are young people in your country who are very interested in exploring their Bulgarian history and once again restore honor to your old name.

The country has contrasting regions, some parts are definitely underdeveloped, some are not maintained at all. Though there are parts that are quite the opposite, mainly the tourist areas, many of which are on the Black Sea coast.
Sofia itself, I wouldn't consider it as a main tourist area. It's more of an industrial city.
Which parts of Bulgaria have you been to?
A friend of mine from Belgrade, a Serb, is going to Bulgaria in a few days. He's heading for Sunny Beach, I'm curious to hear his perspective. He hasn't been to Bulgaria before.

^ Yeah I don't think this is anything serious either. People are overly hyped up during most sporting events. This could have easily happened between two opposing teams from within the same country.

It's concidered serious b/c us Balkan people are too bad-ass for the rest of Europe to handle, so this method is used as an attempt to tame us a little.
Poor Rexy doesn't understand these methods, in fact he seems to fall for it everytime.
