"This is one of the many ugly tweets the UMD receives on a daily basis. Another tweet the other day called Macedonians "degenerate results of Albanian, Bulgarian and Serbian incest." calling their neighbors "results of incest" will not help their cause. No one even calls them that. Their people lack pride b/c they lack identity. This is similar to the Alb-card... blaming their neighbors for their misfortunes when this is their own fault. If they don't want to be Serb/Bulgarian or w/e that's fine, but it would make the most sense that they would be the most proud of being Slavic, this is what they should lean and work on. Not that ancient crap the youngens are falling for. we're not that different than them but we do have .... a solid identity/image. Every nation/country in the Olympics should be proud to bear their flag representing their homeland and people. Something is wrong if the Mac atheletes bow their head, when they should be walking tall and proud.

Albania was also looking good despite the small amount of athletes, but they're proud nonetheless.

UZ is 100% correct. I whose parents come from Sarplanina, MK, would feel very uncomfortable/embarrassed carrying a MK flag! We have NO historical right to ancient MK, whether they were Greeks or not!
I always say the country should have been called Vardarija or Paonija. It makes sense and it wouldn't have excluded any of the minorities there.

The name Macedonia is fine but they should of had included the Albanians in the game ,if they would of they would be called Macedonia 7 years ago . But no they wanted to make KULACKI for themselves and exclude the Albanians and the other minorities ,their constitutions proves this .

macedonia does not apply to us Slavs of that region nor the albanians from MK.
the whole thing comes down to trust. neither side have trusted one another, and sadly what happened in 2000 made things worse. regardless, the country is a garbage pit of the balkans (other than Ohrid).
i can't believe how expensive tickets are from the US to fly to Skopje....$1700. When I heard how much one of my family members paid, I could not believe it. You can go to Cancun for half that price and everything included.
don't y i come on this forum...that place disgusts me.

Macedonia is in a very bad economic mood,it cannot continue like this for more than 5 years...This country should change the name to get in EU or get divided.

You're right man. I sent my wife and kids for a couple months, they just got back. They were in Gostivar. My wife had nothing but negative things to say but her parents and siblings are there so she still wants to go. If I can't cross the border and go have a good time in Albania I really don't feel like going at all.

Macedonia had the potential at one time to be a Slavdom hub, a bridge between Serbians and Bulgarians as well. This would for sure forment unity.
The last thing this new Mac identity needs is Serbs/Bulgars and Greeks as enemies. This only strengthens the Albanians and when shit does hit the fan, Serbs/Bulgs and Greeks wont have sympathy with how Macedonia is later dealt with, whether be division/border changes or complete takeover.

^Wrong. The 2001 conflict Macedonia was more than happy to receive aid from Serbia, Greece and Bulgaria.

...the country is a garbage pit of the balkans (other than Ohrid). don't y i come on this forum...that place disgusts me. I think that's a very unfair thing to say. I have traveled a lot lately and to be honest, Macedonia is no worse than most of eastern Europe. All criticisms towards Macedonia can also be applied to all the other Balkan countries. Hell, I've been to the mighty Czech Republic and if you strip away all the nice old buildings they have, it's not very different to Macedonia. You sound like a westerner who looks down on your own people, just because you have had privileges that they haven't. Would you yourself be any different if you grew up and stayed there? I doubt it.

My reference to 'garbage' is the lay of the land. It is garbage!! People throw away throw stoves, cars etc in a forest next to the village. What's that all about? Of course, for a westerner seeing that it's a bit shocking.
When they can throw bs money on buildings, statues (that have ZERO historical basis on the people there), but leave garbage and dead animals along side road.....that's fk'd up! Mayb they need to stop building all these unnecessary churches everywhere and focus on helping all the people.

It's the same shit everywhere man. This is eastern Europe. The entire region is the garbage pit of Europe according to western standards. Get your family members to visit any other country in the Balkans next time and tell me what they think. I think you suffer from "the grass is always greener on the other side" syndrome. Macedonia is not much worse that the rest of eastern Europe, and definitely not the worst overall. Believe me, I've been around a bit now, and there are places far less impressive.

Mac priest kisses putins hand .......
A monk at the Valaam Monastery in northwestern Russia explained why he had kissed Vladimir Putin’s hand during the Russian president’s visit, the monastery’s spokesman Mikhail Shishkov said on Tuesday.
Putin visited the monastery on the Valaam Island in the Russian Republic of Karelia on Monday to hold a meeting of the Russian Geographical Society’s supervisory board. A video by the RT TV channel shows Hegumen Mefody, an aide to the monastery’s head, kissing the Russian leader’s hand, which Putin quickly withdrew. The clip spurred a heated debate in the media and the blogosphere, with some people saying such acts were improper for a priest.
But Shishkov said the gesture of Father Mefody, who is from Macedonia, was as a sign of respect for the Russian nation on behalf of the brotherly Macedonian nation, adding that among priests and laypeople, kissing hands is one of Eastern Orthodox Christianity’s traditions that symbolizes meekness.
“He is a Macedonian; he came to Russia to dedicate himself to serving God. I personally asked Father Mefody: ‘A question is being discussed in the media: why did you kiss the Russian president’s hand?’” Shishkov told RIA Novosti. “He answered: ‘I kissed the Russian president’s hand as a token of acknowledgement of the great Russian nation by the small [Macedonian] nation,’” Shishkov said.
Shishkov lamented that he had received “many unpleasant calls,” including from journalists, after the incident. “People call me and say: ‘Why do you crawl, why do you behave like sycophants?’ I have not heard such boorishness before.”
“This person is a Macedonian; he filled that action with profound meaning. But [critics] only see the church as an enemy and aggressor. They are not interested in how many people he brought to Christ, how selflessly he works or how hospitably he receives Valaam guests,” the monastery’s spokesman said.
Critics have accused some of the Russian Orthodox Church's hierarchs, including its head Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, of failure to comply with Christian commandments. Church officials have dismissed the accusations. The church has also come under attacks over its support for Putin, who was elected Russian president for a third nonconsecutive term in March and was sworn into office in May. Shishkov also said Father Mefody apologized to those whom he may have confused when he kissed Putin’s hand.
“As I love the Russian nation very much, this is a manifestation of my Christian love as a representative of a small Slavic nation toward the great Russian nation,” Shishkov quoted Father Mefody as saying. “I apologize to all people I involuntarily confused by that act.”
Father Mefody said he reveres Balkan traditions, one of which is to respect seniors, and added that he had “always kissed the hands” of his parents and grandparents as a sign of love and respect. The Novy Region news agency quoted Alexander Okunev, a blogger, as saying that his mother knows Father Mefody. He said Mefody became a monk in Russia, and Putin helped him receive Russian citizenship, for which the priest is grateful.
