I noticed something interest about old ladies in Albania. Whenever I would walk back from school I would see various nena's dressed in the typical black looking out from their windows. Whenever someone passed by whom they knew they would call out to them. They would sit there for long periods of time just looking outside of their windows, watching the block. Nothing could escape their eye. I always wondered what they hell makes them do this. When they had balconies they would take a seat and just sit there. It would creep me out. They all just sit there staring at your as you were passing.
I was coming back from the gym today and I noticed something. Along my block there are about 5-6 Greek inhabited houses/apartments. The SAME F'IN Thing. Its as if you cant escape the grannies. They just sit by the window just staring outside of it, 3/4 of them looking at me as I moved along the street.
Its the same thing with Italian grannies here.
WTF!!! Do they know something that I dont about the world? Its so weird how a person can waste time like this.

You should see in my village in Greece..it's frightening... they sit like ghost by the windows.... if you stare long enough back at them, they might say something.. Lately when I go to my parents house I see my father sitting by the window.... one eye on the tv and the other on the street.

lol thats so typical, but in a weird way i do miss it on my apartment building (i lived on second floor) in the first floor below me was this fixture on the window. A woman retired from work that spend 50% of here life by the window. It was convenient in a way, when coming from school as a kid I would ask here: did u see my parents going out or comming in? Based on here answer I would judge if I could hang a bit more outside with my friends or not.

I remember that also, they would gather in front on someones house at night and turn the lights off and listen if someone was passing by and then comment about them afterwards.
I doubt that secret service had more information on locals lol
As far as what would make them do that I believe it is genetic and kicks in with certain older age within local females (although I notice they gossip to lesser extent at earlier age also lol).
Thus it is most likely not a conscious choice. Why would nature make this behavior pattern among them?
Perhaps to subconsciously 'police' or monitor locals for physical, behavioral and other abnormalities.
Keep in mind that Spartan society practiced conditional breeding and monitored all for health reasons and what is not to say that such behavior was not exhibited previously in historically unrecorded times in wider regions of Balkans (certainly inner mountainous regions would appear more likely if any).
Just a theory?
Does Gossip serve a productive function? Meaning does it benefit overall society?

I do the same thing sometimes, it is not as bad as you might think...you just sit in a clean air watch people live life basically; sometimes you watch hot girls and sometimes you watch how RETARDED people are, its fun, and you think deep thoughts "why do we exist?" "why do we look like we do?" (some example questions inside your mind), or you think about nothing basically being half asleep daydreaming (and occasionally if you have some weed you smoke lol jk)

you should see the gazes of the grannies and gramps in Epirus when they see a car with German license numbers.....the embodiment of curiousness.

Without exagerating even one percent, whenever I travel to my hometown, I visit our apartment--where my grandfather lives--as rarely as possible. I'm glad that this was posted, because my relatives keep saying that I'm being weird.
Listen, the same old lady sits there day in and day out; and she's been doing that since I was 5. At least that's as far as my memory goes when it comes to her. She asks the same kind of questions and she still uses that tone that you use when you talk to children. I can't stand it. Since I usually travel to Romania in the summer, they are always there, active: taking their sit on two benches that face each other. That means that you're surrounded, so when you face one group to talk to them, you know that the other group watches your back.

If I'm weird, it's not due to me avoiding the housewives sitting on the bench all day.

Not really. It is something that losers like to do. Badmouthing successful ones is their joy. Jealousy and nostalgia about lost opportunities is the main drive behind this kind of behavior. Most of the grannies at that age feel like they have nothing else to do. They are pushed away from any productive activity. They feel useless. By watching over people and commenting on them probably makes them feel useful to society by undertaking the watchdog function using their "wisdom". They kind of offer their services to the society in hope it will benefit from their "wisdom", but "unfortunatelly" nobody values this "valuable" service, except their granny friends.
Sad way of wasting your time... Say you are at their age you are kind of waiting for your turn as your friends die one by one. But the only thing you can think of is gossiping and badmouthing... Ts ts ts, what a shame. At least pray to your Lord and try to do some charity. Become volunteer in a hospital, may be... Try to be really useful to people till the last breath...
PEACE

I'll have to agree with the terrorist. I don't think that gossip had any constructive role in society, such as alerting others of danger. It is good to stay alert and community with others on your surrounding, but not the way gossip is conducted. I think gossip is a tactical move that is meant to keep things the way they want it to be. It's about self-interest.

Well, I think there is also a role they have to maintain that influences this. The men, in contrast to the women, are always outside playing chess or some other kind of board game for hours on end. Otherwise they sit on their benches next to eachother all day long commenting on this and that.

Albanians are not racially Mediterranean or culturally. Mediterranean are Greeks, Italians, Spanish, Portuguese, Lebanese, Israelis and Turks/ Anatolians.
