I still know Sbonias and Nastas from my mothers village...next to Bouras, Pliakas that are obviously albanian names.
I would say that the Epirus-Arvanites cannot be compared (regarding their ethnicity) with the Arvanites of southern Greece. The reason is that in Epirus you had Albanian trustees for quite a long time. I have seen people speaking arvanitika who look supergreek...and very many....a totally med.and absolutely non-balkanic type...I dont know this region is an enigma to me.

No Im not... enough of these stupid games. Im tired of these convos going in this same direction. Ill make it very very clear to you Kastor: I feel absolutely no kinship whatsoever with these people nor with the majority of people of Epirus (outside of Bektashis and the majority, though not all, of Orthodox Albs). Outside of that, I feel about as close to the others as a dolphin would feel close to a zebra.

Actually, much was done within education to make children abstain from using their mother tongue if it wasn't Greek. Part of the process was to label the abive mentioned languages as "uncultured", "savage" etc, shaming its native speakers so they would distance themselves from it.
My father was in Greece in 1988, visiting Ioannina, Athens, Corinth, Epidauros etc. When he was in Corinth, he saw a man, an ordinary citizen. He said to his friend, "look at him, put a plis on him and you'd think he was an elderly from Drenica or Dukagjin" (regions in Kosova). Sure enough, the man turned out to be an Arvanites. I think it depends ... naturally, the Arvanites mixed with Greeks, and many of them look "Greek" now ... some might've looked "mediterranean" even when they firstly settled in Greece, before any serious intermixture. Many of the Arbëresh of Italy too differ considerably from Albanians of Albania and Kosova. But it doesn't change their origins, nor the fact that many of them still identify as Albanians. They are my compatriots as well.

They are my compatriots as well. nevertheless Metsovo Peristeri Pramanta Syrako retained the vlah language very easily. As far as schools are concerned, we didnt have many before 1900, so.... its time to accept reality dont you think. I am amazed you mentioned Ioannina, but no arbos there reported by your father... I cant say the same about my father when he visited Argyrokastro/Korytsa/Tepeleni/Ag. Saranta.

Interesting. So the Zosimaia was not founded before 1828.
Funny. My father/grandfathers and my own personal travels say the opposite of what your own father "said".
Isnt that weird?
Dear god! I responded to Pyrros. Alright... ufff... wow! Um... yea. This is going to be the only time.

Cant you see the difference between 10 schools in Ioannina and the word "MANY"?
Anyway, in any local survey done in Ioannina region, pre-1918 someone could find turkos, vlahs but no arbos.

A little correction. Truth is not simply "not terrible"...its much more than that. Its beautiful, its all in all perfect.
