I came across an interesting quote:
"Patriotism is when love of your own people comes first; nationalism, when hate for people other than your own comes first."
According to the definition of this quote, what do you think Albanians are?

nationalistic. The vast vast majority of Albs I have come across have some very entrenched concepts of nationalism. Whether it is Serbs, or Greeks... most Albanians I know have an open hatred for either or both.

if we give an Albanian 300€ he rejects his albanian identity immediately... If a German gives a Greek 300€, the Greek spends the first 300€ immediately on a night of ouzo. The next night the Grek borrows 300€ from the German bank so he can buy some more ouzo. On the 3rd night, the Grek tries to borrow another 300€ from the bank, but the German bank tells him to fck off and repay his first loan. The Greek then complains how the German is mistreating him and the Greek reminds him when Ancient Greeks had indoor plumbing, the German were fingering their pigs (although such a practice is actually Greek.) The Greek gets mad that the German won't lend him another 300€ and burns down the bank. Moral of the story, the days of bribing with 300€ are over.

If based on that quote, its definately nationalism. Love for other albanians, etc is tricky, squabbles on a local level is common--house to house, cities, zones, etc i hear it. Jealousy is another bad trait ive noticed with some Albanians. But when it comes to national issues/foreign threats, thats where we put everything aside and unite.

Nationalists: hate for Greeks has always come first.

I consider myself more patriotic than nationalistic. I love my country and I want the best for my country, and the people I know are more like this. I don't hate anyone, even Serbs even though I have been through hell because of them, nevertheless I do not like them for that reason and that they still try to "damage us" in every way possible. Nationalistic to me is the same as those "extremists" that call themselves musilm, christian or whatever where their hate is a priority instead of trying to improve their lives.
ps. I didn't vote because I have no idea what other people are, because if I said nationalistic/patriotic/other I automatically assume that I know the majority of Albanians.

Every Albanian that I have met were very patriotic. There was nothing about hating non-Albanians. There was only caution and mistrust, until they knew you and got to trust you. Once they trust you, you can become family with them.
The caution and mistrust is not nationalistic behavior. It is natural to be cautious with an outsider, and does not imply hatred.

I hope I won't offend anyone with my post - I'm only talking from my own observations . I think the Albanians I know here from Scandinavia are very, very, VERY different from the Albanians I have come to know here (as much as you can get to know people over the internet), who're located primarily in America. From what I've observed, I think the Albanians from America seem extremely nationalistic - to an extend where it's kind of obnoxious because Albania is all they've got in their mind. I don't know if it's because it's so easy to be assimilated in America and the Albanians there just hold on extra tightly to their roots from the fear of loosing them. I've also considered that Albanians in America are far away from their motherland - maybe, on top of being vulnerable to assimilation, they don't get the chance to stay close to Albania...visiting the country regularly and often. The Albanians I personally know, from Scandinavia, are definitely not obnoxiously nationalistic...in your face. They're just very proud and patrotic.

Vanilo, hopefully we the forumers from Americas can change your perception. I would think we are the opposite. A lot of Albanians i've met are self-depriciating when it comes to their country. They make jokes about it...

Insomniac, I'm open to learn differently about Albanians in America for sure...I'm not so sure though, that I'm going to learn it from here . I hope you didn't take my words as if my opinions of Albanians in America are negative. It's just extreme nationalism, whoever is practicing it, that I'm not fan of. But I think there must be a reason why people are fanatic about their heritage... Mysia, Thanks, I'll listen to it when I get home . I forgot to mention that in regards to religion, I've also noticed a difference between Albanians in America and Europe. The American Albanians seem very against religion but I honestly can't say I know of any Albanians around my area who's an Atheist. Even though many Albanians aren't strict Muslims, they still take pride in being Muslims I once posted a picture of my Albanian friend, Faton - he's a good example of a Muslim Albanian who's not a strict Muslim (he drinks, doesn't care about halal and haram, has girlfriends, sex etc.) but he actually gets crazily offended if anyone asks him whether or not he's Muslim...to him, it's a very obvious part of him.

Most Albanians in Europe come from rural areas of Kosova and FYROM, areas that tend to move towards various levels of conservativism while most Albanians in America come from: 1) more educated and urban background and 2) come from Albania, which, due to Enver Hoxha suppression of faith in its totality (a very good move) have almost no religion and have lost various religious cultural traditions (we served sausages during a Ramazan night gathering once). Generally, the more atheist/secular an Albanian is, the more intelligent he is... the more islamic/religious the more ignorant. I dont doubt your friend Faton is a nice guy, but I can guess already that he is not too bright and probably from rural Kosova or Macedonia. Very recently I met an Albanian from the Albanian side of Diber (culturally conservative and close to FYROM albs). Nice guy, but I had no respect for him since I saw him at a local mosque (that I went to with a Turkish friend of mine as a joke). These kinds of people would have spent their lives in prison under Hoxha and its unfortunate that it has since stopped.

She doesnt know any, she, like many people here from Europe, know Albs from Albania or America only through the internet. its very hard to find Albanians from Albania in Germany, Switzerland, the various Nordic countries, etc. etc.
