Post all results for Serbia in the olympics. Someone should make this a sticky till the end of the olympics.
After 96 years, Serbia will be making its return to the Olympic Games in 2008. After competing as an independent nation for the first time at the 1912 Stockholm Games, Serbia then formed part of Yugoslavia from 1920. After the break-up of Yugoslavia in the early 1990s, Serbia continued to form part of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in 1996 and 2000, and then competed as Serbia & Montenegro in 2004.
Teams from the region have traditionally been competitive in sports like basketball, volleyball, handball and football, but water polo is by far the Serbian's strongest event. Nine members of the 2004 Olympic Games silver medal winning Serbia & Montenegro team hail from Serbia, putting the team in a good position to secure a positive result in Beijing.
Serbia is particularly strong in tennis at the moment with Novak Djokovic, Ana Ivanovic and Jelena Jankovic all doing well in the world rankings.
Some of Serbia's most high-profile Olympians to compete under different flags are tennis player Monica Seles [USA], basketballer Vlade Divac [YUG] and swimmer Milorad Cavic [YUG].
Opening football game ended 1-1 against Australia. Serbia should have won, they had way more chances but blew it.

Serbia to participate in Olympics as an independent state
The 1912 Stockholm Games were the last time Serbia participated in the Olympics as an independent state. Afterward, as a part of several state alliances, Serbian athletes competed in the Olympics under different national names. This year in Beijing, for the first time in 96 years, they will compete under the Serbian flag again.
In Beijing, 91 athletes will represent Serbia. Although the country has a tradition of high achievement in team sports -- notably basketball, water polo and handball -- this year Serbia's highest expectations are for individual sports. The nation is looking to female tennis players Ana Ivanovic and Jelena Jankovic, who have top worldwide rankings.
In men's tennis, Novak Djokovic ranks third in the world. Nenad Zimonjic is number one in doubles and won at Wimbledon earlier this month. Many expect him to win gold in Beijing.
Serbian swimmers also have a good chance of winning medals. Milorad Cavic holds the current European record for the 100m crawl.
In team sports, much is expected from the water polo team, which recently lost to Montenegro in the European Championship finals. The players pledged to make up for that defeat in Beijing.
Male and female volleyball teams also stand a good chance of winning medals. The men's team surprised many by taking second place in the World League late this month. The female players will arrive in Beijing as European silver medalists.
Serbian President Boris Tadic handed the national flag to the athletes when seeing them off. The flag-bearer in the opening ceremony will be Jasna Sekaric, considered the top member of the Serbian delegation because she already has five Olympic medals in shooting.
"I am very proud and happy to carry the flag, and I think that we are all happy to compete under the Serbian flag after 96 years," Sekaric said.
"I wish you a safe trip and I want you to do what you can at the Olympic Games, because whatever you do will be enough," Tadic told the athletes.

Serbia beats Kazakhstan in Olympic women's volleyball debut
BEIJING, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- Serbia beat Kazakhstan 3-1 here on Saturday in a pool B preliminary match between two Olympic women's volleyball debutants at the Beijing Games.
In their first appearance at the Olympic Games, the Serbian women repeated their victory over the Asian team at the Olympic qualification tournament in Tokyo in May with a 25-21, 25-17, 23-25 and 25-21 win at the BIT gymnasium.
"It's a very important victory for us, because it's our first match at the Olympics," said Serbia head coach Zoran Terzic.
"We knew it would be a difficult match, not because of the level of Kazakhstan, but because it's always difficult to play the first match in such important tournaments like the Olympics."
Serbia, who surprised the volleyball world by winning the bronze medal at the 2006 World Championships, started well toward its goal of winning a medal in Beijing.
"It's a great boost to our confidence, and we need one more win against Algeria and practically we are in the quarter-finals," said Zoran Terzic, who also led her team to a fifth finish at the 2007 World Cup in Japan.
Kazakhstan, which claimed the fourth and final place for the Beijing Games at the Olympic qualification tournament, fought bravely in the third set for a 19-16 lead before Serbia came back to tie it at 23-all.
Inna Matveyeva made it 24-23 with a kill and Natalya Zhukova blocked Maja Ognjenovic to pull one set back for Kazakhstan.
In the fourth set, Serbia jumped to a 8-2 lead and enlarged it to 24-13. Kazakhstan beat off eight match points to pull within 24-21, forcing Terzic to call a time out. After the game resumed, Jelena Nikolic beat Yelena Ezau in a fight over the net for the match winner.
Nikolic and Jovana Brakocevic each notched 20 points to lead Serbia while Yelena Pavlova contributed 16 points for Kazakhstan.
