Fyrom to end contentious talks with Greece over name if NATO bid vetoed WASHINGTON (AP) - The Fyromian foreign minister threatened to end negotiations with Greece over the former Yugoslav republic's name if Fyrom's southern neighbor vetoes its bid to join NATO. Antonio Milososki also said Monday that chances are small that a deal on the name can be reached before next week's NATO summit. Greece has insisted that Fyrom change its name, which it says implies territorial claims on the neighboring province of northern Greece that also is called Macedonia. Greece's greatest hero, Alexander the Great, was Macedonian. U.N. envoy Matthew Nimetz has invited Greek and Fyromian negotiators to New York for talks on Tuesday. The dispute has simmered for 15 years but is reaching a crisis ahead of the NATO summit at which Fyrom will be considered for membership in the alliance along with Albania and Croatia. Fyrom has broken many interim agreements, renaming of airports to Alexander the great, maps of greater fyrom and statues of Alexander the Great. So many more examples. Greece still has the right to veto under article 11 of the 1995 Interim Agreement.
Article 11. Greece has the right to bloc FYROM’s aspirations for any affiliation with NATO or with the EU with a name not agreed to by Greece.
Greece has recently made a major compromise by proposing "a compound name" for the country, a name that will distinguish it from both the Greek and Fyrom's parts.
So this wasn't good enough ? well Karamanlis Veto we have nothing to loose. We don't need neighbours like that.

SuperAlbaniaN - "May I ask? Why did Greece never challange Yugoslavia whilst FYROM was within Yugoslavia?" -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Americans didnt allow us to create any kind of "problem" to Tito.... since he was not a hardliner of Warsaw impact. If a Nato country (Greece) would create any kind of problem to Tiot.. he would searched for protection to USSR again... and US didnt want that.

Actually there was a secret plan by Millosevic in the early 90'. He was willing to give Alb a piece of Kosovo, was going to move the serb population of FYROM near the greek borders Also he said to greek foreign minister at the time Samaras, to ask Alb and give a part of North Epirus to Greece. Mitsotakis lost his colour when heard this proposition....
If this happened; Indipendent Kosovo would not exist, neither FYROM problem.
Im afraid maybe FYROM goverment has made its mind to divide the country....and give to alb a small piece. If there will be no division, they will turn to us and see us as allies....who knows....

26 March 2008 Skopje _ The latest United Nations proposal for a solution to the “name” row between Athens and Skopje is far from Greek goals, Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bako told media on Wednesday. This is Bako's first official reaction after Greek and Macedonian diplomats were handed a new proposal for on a compromise name at Tuesday's UN-sponsored talks in New York. Read more at www.balkaninsight.com/en/main/news/8906/“The talks will continue,” Bako added, reiterating the Greek position on vetoing Macedonia’s bid to join NATO at the alliance's Bucharest Summit next week, if a solution is not found.
