I rarely go to these Albanian clubs in NY, but from what I've heard, all the guys are dressed to the "T." All designer brands and it's pretty much a competition on who as the most expensive clothing on.
Even back home some of my cousins have designer clothes and the newest cellphone while I'm still wearing Levi's that I found on sale and my cellphone was provided free via a 2 year subscription.

LOL cheap ass.
Speaking of cellphones, I don't know if this is something with the Albanians I know, but every time I have coffee with Albanians, they they always take the cellphone and cigarettes out of the pockets, and leave them on the table. As if to show them off. Anyone else notice this?

Yea, I noticed a lot of what you guys are talking about in Serbs too. Serbs are WAY better dressed than Canadians; I also noticed that a lot of Serbs in the diaspora where I live pay attention to their looks and brand names and whatnot but if you called him a queer, you'd get punched in the face no questions asked (true story, haha).

yes I have noticed that !! + looking around like "I'm the king of the place" ... Are you suggesting a man purse for Albos! No, keep those things in your pockets. I don't get why they have to unpack everything out of their pockets when they sit down for coffee. You want to take your cigerettes out, then fine, but not your whole wardrobe. Just a pet peeve of mine.

I place cellphone and cigarettes out of my pockets everytime I sit for a coffee.... but it has to do that both of them press me in my pockets while sitting.... and it is more comfortable to reach them on the table when you need them.. I believe it has to do more with the age of the one is doing it..

People in the Balkans wear tight pants so its hard to remove the stuff and put them back in their pockets. I also noticed that guys in the Balkans are more "close" to one another. For instance I always noticed the way Albanian and Turkish teenagers walk. One person makes a D with his arm and the other person fits his arm through it and walks touching shoulders. Yet the second you call them out on that they get angry. I remember it was common in Albania for kids to throw an arm around the back of the others neck while talking and talk almost directly into the ear. I cant stand it when people are that close to me... if I have to feel someones breath my skin, I immediately throw a fit...

Touching and men kissing each other like most europeans doing is not allowed in America.

Good for America. There is nothing more irritating then being dragged down into long kissing and huggings that accompany seeing somebody. Seriously, whenever I go to a family gathering or a friendly gathering I have to spend 10 mins or so going around the room greeting and kissing people.
Americans rush that, just a handshake and a greeting and be done with it...

Is kissing common in Albania? My friend from Tepelene had a habit of kissing me three times on the cheeks when saying goodbye ... first I thought its some Orthodox gesture, but then I recalled the guy is a communist essentially.
In Kosova I have noticed, and I am speaking of the traditional way in rural areas, people never kissed. Mothers even are rarely seen kissing their children. My two grandmothers never kissed me for instance ... if one sees the documentary of Adem Jashari, one can see him and his brother Hamza greeting their mother the most formal way imaginable ... the more recent generations are different, like my mother, my father and aunts & uncles ... but the old school people were like that, very formal ... which I see as conflicting with the general idea we have of ourselves as overly close and intimate.

An unimaginable scenario for me...kissing is important...its the best (not to say the only) way to express your true love (no matter what kind of) for someone...

It's not like this anymore, and I am speaking of kids, not infants and up to four-five year olds. After that though, it wass more rare and rare and was unseen among adults. Old school. esp. in Drenica where I am from originally.
